Visas for foreigners (INM)
Effective March 1, 2010 U.S. citizens traveling to Mexico as tourists must present a valid passport or passport card to the immigration authority at the point of entry to Mexico.
U.S. citizens living in the border area with Mexico may cross the border without these documents. Nevertheless, they should present them if they are traveling 20 miles or more, beyond the border into Mexico, in the designated checkpoints.
U.S. citizens entering Mexico by sea may enter without such documents if they are visiting port towns for a short visit. They should present a valid passport or passport card if they travel beyond these port towns.
The governmental agency in charge of immigration control and policy in Mexico is the National Immigration Institute (INM in Spanish). The INM is part of the Ministry of the Interior (Segob). We recommend that you visit their web site for further information:

Relevant information at the point of entry
I am a citizen of another country and I want to visit Mexico. Where and how can I get a tourist visa to visit Mexico?
You need to go to a Mexican consulate abroad to ask about the requirements and to take the necessary steps to get your visa. The requirements differ from country to country.
If you are a citizen of Andorra, Argentina, Australia, Austria, Belgium, Canada, Chile, Costa Rica, the Czech Republic, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Great Britain, Greece, Hungary, Ireland, Island, Israel, Italy, Japan, Liechtenstein, Luxembourg, Monaco, Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Puerto Rico, San Marino, Singapore, Slovenia, Spain, South Korea, Sweden, Switzerland, Uruguay or Venezuela, you don’t need a visa to enter Mexico, although you must present a valid passport and fill out an immigration form for tourists and business trips, which can be obtained in travel agencies, airlines or at the point where you enter Mexico.
The immigration officer at your point of entry into Mexico can also request that you demonstrate that you have sufficient funds and a return ticket to your country.
If you are a citizen of any other country, you need to go to a Mexican consulate to request a visa. If you have a family member, friend or acquaintance in Mexico, he or she can do this at the INM.

How can I get permission to work in Mexico?
You must get permission from the INM to reside in Mexico and authorization to do paid work. You must demonstrate that you have a job offer from a Mexican business or institute.

What documentation do I need to study in Mexico?
You need to get a student visa from the INM by demonstrating that you are enrolled in a Mexican school and that you have sufficient financial resources to fund your stay.

I am in Mexico as a tourist. Can I extend my stay in Mexico?
You need to go to any INM office to request an extension of your visa. You need to have with you your valid passport and the tourist card you filled out. You will also need to prove that you can finance your stay and you will have to pay a fee to extend the visa.
This procedure takes only a few minutes.

I lost my tourist card. What do I do?
Go to any office or delegation of the INM to request a replacement. You will need to bring your valid passport and the report of the loss or theft that you made to the proper authorities. A fee is charged for the replacement document.

I want to stay in Mexico longer. What do I have to do?
You need to go to the INM and request an extension or renewal of your immigration document. To do this, you have to demonstrate that the original reasons for which you were granted the visa still exist.

I lost my FM2 or FM3. How can I get a new one?
You must go to any INM office or delegation to request a new FM2 or FM3. You will need to fill out an application and bring your passport and the report of the robbery or loss of the document that you made to the proper authorities. You will also have to fill out a new FM1 format and pay a fee.

Can I do any sort of work in Mexico?
If your immigration status is “No inmigrante” or “inmigrante” (non-resident immigrant), you need to get permission from the INM before you can work in an area that is different from the one that you were authorized for.
If your immigration status is “Inmigrado” (resident), you can engage in any sort of legal and honest work. All you need to do is inform the INM.

Can I bring my family to Mexico?
You need to request visas for your family at the INM so that they enter Mexico either as tourists or as your dependents.
You need to demonstrate that they are first-degree, direct descendents (brothers or sisters, parents, uncles, nephews or nieces). You will also need to demonstrate your economic capacity.

Es el documento oficial que expide la Secretaría de Relaciones Exteriores, por conducto de la Dirección General de Asuntos Juridicos, las Representaciones Consulares de México en el Extranjero y las Delegaciones Foráneas.
En dicho documento se hace constar que el interesado se acogió al beneficio de lo dispuesto en el articulo 37, apartado A) de la Constitución Política de los Estados Unidos Mexicanos, una vez que se ha verificado que adquirió voluntariamente una nacionalidad extranjera antes del 20 de marzo de 1998 y que tiene derecho a la nacionalidad mexicana por nacimiento, por haber nacido en territorio nacional o, por haber nacido en el extranjero y ser hijo de padres mexicanos, en términos de lo dispuesto por el articulo 30, apartado A), fracciones I y II de la Constitución Política de los Estados Unidos Mexicanos.
El interesado en obtener la Declaratoria de Nacionalidad Mexicana por Nacimiento deberá cumplir los siguientes requisitos:
1) Ser mayor de edad y en uso de sus derechos civiles y políticos;
2) Llenar la solicitud correspondiente, cuyo formato puede conseguir de manera gratuita en las oficinas consulares;
3) Entregar copia certificada del acta de nacimiento, que obtendrá en la Oficina del Registro Civil que corresponda, registrado durante el primer año de edad, o en su caso, por el Cónsul mexicano del lugar en el que se realizó el registro; o apostillada por la autoridad correspondiente, en su caso, traducida al idioma español por perito traductor autorizado. Y dos fotocopias.
4) Si el intererado es casado debe presentar acta de matrimonio y dos fotocopias
5) Si el interesado nació en el extranjero, para probar su derecho a la transmisión de la nacionalidad mexicana, deberá presentar copia certificada por la Oficina de Registro Civil que corresponda, del acta de nacimiento del padre o madre mexicanos, registrados durante el primer año de edad, o copia cotejada con su original por el funcionario competente del Certificado o Declaratoria de Nacionalidad Mexicana por Nacimiento. NOTA: el caso seróa sometido a análisis y consulta con México, si se requiere, para determinar si procede o no la transmisión de la nacionalidad.
NOTA: Cuando el registro del nacimiento del interesado o de los padres sea extemporáneo (después del primer año de edad) el interesado deberá presentar alguno de los siguientes documentos:
a) Cotejo notarial de la partida religiosa, si dicho acto se realizó durante el primer año de edad y si ocurrió en territorio nacional;
b) Copia certificada del acta de matrimonio de los padres expedida por la Oficina del Registro Civil, si estos se casaron en territorio nacional y antes del nacimiento del solicitante;
c) Copia certificada del acta de nacimiento de un hermano mayor expedida por la Oficina del Registro Civil, si nació en territorio nacional y fue registrado dnetro del primer año de edad;
d) Copia certificada del acta de nacimiento del padre o madre mexicano expedida por la Oficina del Registro Civil, registrado dentro del primer año de edad, ó
e) Constancia expedida por la autoridad migratoria, de la fecha de internación al país del padre o de la madre extranjeros, si esto ocurrió antes de la fecha de nacimiento del interesado.
6) Entregar copia certificada del documento que acredite que obtuvo voluntariamente otra nacionalidad, antes del 20 de marzo de 1998, debidamente apostillado o legalizado según sea el caso. De no ser posible obtener la copia certificada de dicho documento, el titular de la oficina deberá hacer un cotejo con el original y asentar los motivos por los cuales no es posible que el interesado obtenga una copia certificada para que obre en su expediente;
7) Acreditar su identidad con documento oficial con fotografìa y firma, ya sea mexicano o extranjero, del que deberá obrar una copia cotejada con su original en el expediente correspondiente. Se pueden exhibir cualquiera de los siguientes documentos, siempre y cuando cumplan las características antes citadas.
8) Debe presentar alguna identifiación oficial vigente y dos fotocopias.
9) Comprobante de dirección y dos fotocopias.
10) Se debe presentar el certificado de naturalización estadounidense, APOSTILLADO por la Secretraria de Estado de Washington, por tratarse de un documento federal, una traducción oficial del mismo, junto con dos fotocopias.
11) Presentar dos fotografías a color, tamaño pasaporte (4.5 x 3.5 cm), con fondo blanco, de frente, sin anteojos, cabeza descubierta, tomada con una anterioridad no mayor a 30 días, y
