GENERAL INFORMATION

 

All foreigners are required to present a valid passport when entering Mexico (traveling by air, sea or land), and a Mexican visa when is needed. A Mexican visa is not required to enter Mexico for tourism, business or transit purposes, for holders of the following two documents:

  • Permanent residence card from Canada, the United States, Japan, the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, any countries of the Schengen Area, and countries of the Pacific Alliance (Chile, Colombia and Peru).
  • Valid visa from Canada, the United States, Japan, the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, any countries of the Schengen Area.

IMPORTANT: Forms I-797 A, Advance Parole, I-20 or DS-2019 are not enough to enter Mexico, therefore a Mexican visa is needed.

  • Visas for visitors without authorization for lucrative activities (no more than 180 days) for citizens from El Salvador, Guatemala, Haiti, Honduras, Nicaragua, Dominican Republic, Serbia, South Africa, are free of charge.
  • Unidad de Medida y Actualización (UMA) applicable in Mexico for 2025 is $113.14 mexican pesos.

IMPORTANT

All documents mentioned in the requirements must be submitted in original, including all letters (employment, school, etc...) which must contain original signatures. Documents issued by bank institutions, including account statements, they must be originals and certified/ stamped by the bank.

PROCEDURE TO SCHEDULE AN APPOINTMENT ON THE "MI CONSULADO" PORTAL

IT IS ESSENTIAL THAT BEFORE SCHEDULING AN APPOINTMENT, YOU VISIT THE SECTION FOR THE PROCEDURE YOU WISH TO CARRY OUT TO KNOW ALL THE REQUIREMENTS YOU MUST PRESENT ON THE DAY OF YOUR APPOINTMENT. ONCE YOU ARE SURE YOU HAVE ALL THE NECESSARY DOCUMENTATION, YOU SHOULD PROCEED TO SCHEDULE THE APPOINTMENT ON THE "MI CONSULADO" PORTAL.

  •  Access the "MI CONSULADO" portal using the GOOGLE CHROME browser: https://citas.sre.gob.mx/
  •  You must CREATE AN ACCOUNT by following each step required by the page.
  •  If you already have an account, you should LOG IN by providing your email and password.
  •  Accept the phrase "I have read and accept the terms and conditions."
  •  Select "Schedule."
  •  In Step 1, you must select:

Country: United States
State: Georgia
Consular Office: Atlanta

  •  Confirm that the Consulate General in Atlanta is the Representation where you want to schedule your appointment.
  •  Next, enter the applicant’s information. If you have a CURP, you should enter it. Otherwise, you should select "Add Manually."
  •  In Step 2, select the procedure you wish to carry out, please select the option: 

Visas: You must select whether the visa is WITHOUT INM PERMIT for tourism, temporary residence, temporary student residence, or permanent residence; or WITH INM PERMIT if you have a NUT document.

According to Mexican Immigration Regulations, the process to obtain a visa could take one to ten business days. Although we usually complete the process in one day, we are not able to guarantee a same day issuing.

CATEGORIES AND REQUIREMENTS

 

 

Applicable to foreign nationals who wish to enter Mexico under the status of Visitor without permission to engage in paid activities, for a period of up to 180 days.

Requirements:

I. Passport or travel and identity document that is valid under international law and currently in force, in original;
II. Original of the document proving legal stay, if the foreign national is not a citizen of the country where the visa is being requested; and
III. Submit documents proving any of the following cases:

a) Proof of ties to the country of residence.
b) Financial solvency.
c) Invitation from a public or private organization or institution.
d) Truck driver or transport operator of cargo, who intends to enter national territory solely for the purpose of loading or unloading goods.
e) Humanitarian reasons.
f) Scientific research or collection of samples in national territory or national jurisdictional waters, upon prior authorization from the competent national authorities in territorial waters.
g) Studies.
h) Participation in an event sponsored or supported by the Federal Public Administration, as well as by autonomous constitutional bodies, for a maximum duration of 180 days.

Applicable to foreign nationals with broad financial solvency, frequent travelers, prominent individuals, spouses, common-law partners or equivalent of Mexican nationals, temporary or permanent residents, family members of temporary or permanent residents, or of accredited diplomatic or consular officials in Mexico, and supervisors of a foreign company with a branch in Mexico, or executive personnel of branches or commercial offices of Mexican companies abroad, who wish to enter Mexico under the condition of Visitor without permission to engage in paid activities, and who do not intend to reside in Mexico.

Requirements:

I. Passport or travel and identity document valid under international law and currently in force, in original.
II. Original of the document proving legal stay, if the foreign national is not a citizen of the country where the visa is being requested.
III. Submit documents proving any of the following cases:

a) Financial solvency.
b) Frequent traveler.
c) Prominent person.
d) Family member of a Mexican citizen.
e) Family member of a temporary or permanent foreign resident.
f) Family member of a diplomatic or consular officer accredited in Mexico holding an ordinary passport.
g) Supervisor of a foreign company with a branch in Mexico or executive personnel of commercial offices or Mexican companies abroad.

For the reception, application, and, where applicable, authorization of the visa: USD $53.00

Applicable to foreign nationals of nationalities for which the Mexican State allows the application and issuance of a visa through electronic means and records, when they intend to travel to Mexico by air to enter under the status of Visitor without permission to engage in paid activities.

Requirements:

I. Passport or travel and identity documents that is valid under international law and currently in force, proving nationality from a country eligible to obtain the Electronic Visa.
II. Fill out the Electronic Visa application form, providing the information required by the immigration authority.
III. Digital photograph of the applicant’s face without glasses, with a white background, like the passport photo, in .jpg, .jpeg, or .png format, with a file size between 2 and 5 MB.
IV. Image of the passport data page or travel and identity document in .jpg, .jpeg, or .png format, with a file size between 2 and 5 MB, ensuring the image fits the parameters of the data page and is clearly legible.
V. Travel to Mexico by air.
VI. Payment of fees shall be made in accordance with Article 22 of the current Federal Law on Fees.

Applicable to foreign nationals who wish to enter Mexico under the condition of Visitor for adoption purposes, and who are nationals or habitual residents of a country that is a party to the Hague Convention on Protection of Children and Cooperation in Respect of Intercountry Adoption, or of a country with which Mexico has signed an agreement on the subject.

Requirements:

I. Passport or travel and identity document valid under international law and currently in force, in original;
II. Original of the report of adoptability or pre-assignment issued by the National System for Integral Family Development (DIF), indicating information on the identity of the child or adolescent;
III. Original of the acceptance of the child’s assignment and continuation of the adoption procedure, issued by the Central Authority of the Receiving State, expressing its and the applicants’ willingness to proceed with the adoption procedure; and
IV. Payment of fees for the reception, review of the application, and, where applicable, authorization of the visa, in accordance with the provisions of the Federal Law on Fees.

NOTE: Within the following 30 calendar days from the date of entry into Mexico, the foreign national must obtain, from the National Migration Institute (INM), the Visitor card for adoption purposes.

Applicable to foreign nationals who wish to enter Mexico under the status of Temporary Resident, with the intention of remaining for more than 180 days and up to 4 years.

This type of visa allows the foreign national to work in Mexico, provided that the salary is paid abroad.

If there is a job offer in Mexico and the salary will be paid within national territory, the company or individual employer must first request authorization directly from the National Migration Institute (INM) for the issuance of the visa.

Requirements:

I. Passport or travel and identity document valid under international law and currently in force, in original;
II. Original of the document proving legal stay, if the foreign national is not a citizen of the country where the visa is being requested; and
III. Submit documents proving any of the following cases:

a) Financial solvency.
b) Scientific research in Mexican jurisdictional waters.
c) Invitation from an organization or a public or private institution.
d) Under an international legal instrument on the mobility of persons.
e) Family unity.
f) Real estate property in Mexico.
g) Investor.

NOTE: In any case, the foreign national must, within 30 calendar days from the date of entry into Mexico, apply for the residence card that certifies their legal stay and allows them to remain in Mexico.

Applicable to foreign nationals who wish to enter Mexico under the status of Temporary Resident Student.

A foreign national holding the status of Temporary Resident Student may request authorization from the National Migration Institute to engage in remunerated activities in Mexico.

Requirements:

I. Passport or travel and identity document valid under international law and currently in force, in original;
II. Original of the document proving legal stay, if the foreign national is not a citizen of the country where the visa is being requested; and
III. Submit documents proving any of the following cases:

a) Studies.
b) Under an international legal instrument on the mobility of people.

Financial solvency may be proven by the applicant, their parents, or whoever holds parental authority or legal guardianship, provided they are not over twenty-five years old, or with a letter from the educational institution proving that the applicant has been awarded a scholarship, or with a document from a bank or financial institution proving sufficient funding.

NOTE: The Temporary Resident Student card certifying legal stay and allowing the applicant to remain in Mexico must be obtained within 30 calendar days from the date of entry into the country.

Requirements:

I. Passport or travel and identity document valid under international law and currently in force, in original;
II. Original of the document proving legal stay, if the foreign national is not a citizen of the country where the visa is being requested; and
III. Submit documents proving any of the following cases:

a) Retired or pensioned individuals.
b) Family unity.
c) Points-based system.

NOTE: The residence card certifying legal stay and allowing the applicant to remain in Mexico must be obtained from the National Migration Institute (INM) within 30 calendar days from the date of entry into the country.

I. Visitor Visa without permission to engage in paid activities, when requested for humanitarian reasons.
II. Visitor Visa with permission to engage in paid activities, when requested based on a job offer.
III. Temporary Resident Visa, when requested based on a job offer or family unity.
IV. Permanent Resident Visa, when requested under the points-based system, for family unity, or because of recognition of refugee status.
