Individuals holding a Mexican temporary or permanent resident visa or card may import their household goods into Mexico duty-free.

This process must be completed in person at the Consulate, Monday through Friday, from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. The certificate will be ready the following business day.

According to Mexican law, household goods include furniture, linens, books, clothing, and scientific or artistic work, provided these items are NOT part of collections intended for exhibitions or galleries.

To obtain a household import certificate, you must submit the following documents:

  1. A Temporary or Permanent Resident Visa issued by a Consular Office, or a Resident Card issued by the National Migration Institute (INM), along with 4 photocopies.
  2. A valid passport, including 4 copies of the main identification page.
  3. A typed letter in Spanish addressed to the Consulate General of Mexico, requesting certification of the household goods list. The letter must include your last address in the United States, the duration of your stay there, and your new address in Mexico. 4 original signed copies are required.
  4. A typed list in Spanish of all household goods, specifying the quantity and description of each item, as well as the brand, model, and serial number of all electronic appliances. 4 original signed copies are required.

Important: You may import household goods as a family only once, and only if the following conditions are met:

  • Only furniture and used clothing/linens are allowed.
  • Major electronic appliances must not be duplicated (e.g., only one refrigerator, one stove).
  • The quantity of household goods must correspond to the number of family members.
  • New electric or electronic appliances are not permitted.
  • Food and beverages are not considered household goods.
  • Firearms are strictly prohibited.
  • Motor vehicles are not considered household goods.
  • For Temporary Residents and Students, the import of household goods is temporary and valid only for the duration of your immigration status. You must keep your immigration status current and notify customs authorities of any address changes while in Mexico. You are also required to return the imported goods when leaving the country.

Note: This certificate allows you to import household goods into Mexico only if the items arrive within six months of your first entry.

Mexican customs will require a copy of your Immigration Form (FMM, stamped by Mexican immigration authorities) or your Temporary or Permanent Resident Card.
