Before applying, please review this list of Countries that DO NOT require a visa to enter Mexico.
You DO NOT REQUIRE A VISA to travel to Mexico for tourism purposes or non-paid activities for up to 180 days if you:
a) Hold an APEC Business Travel Card (ABTC) approved by Mexico.
b) Are a citizen or permanent resident of the United States, Canada, and Japan, United Kingdom or any country of the Schengen Area, Chile and Colombia.
c) Bear a valid unexpired visa (any kind) of the United States, Canada, Japan, United Kingdom or any country of the Schengen Area stamped on your passport.
To enter as a tourist or for any non-paid activity for up to 180 days, a citizen of the aforementioned countries should bear their valid passports, while foreigners (included citizens of the aforementioned countries) should bear their valid passports and depending on their specific case, a valid unexpired permanent resident card or a valid unexpired visa (any type) of the above mentioned countries, stamped on their passports.
- If the US visa stamped in your passport or your permanent resident card are expired, but you have an official document or form proving your legal status in USA, you must apply for a Mexican visa at this Consulate. All EAD cards, I-797 A Forms, Advance Parole Forms, I-20 OR DS-2019 are not accepted to enter Mexico.
Mexico does not apply the 6 months policy; however passports and visas or permanent residence cards must be valid and unexpired during the length of your trip.
Anyone who does not meet the aforesaid criteria must obtain a visa.
The fee (for any type of visa) is $54 USD.
For any type of visa you want to apply for, you need to schedule an appointment for an interview to render your application and be interviewed by a consular officer.

You must bring the original of all the required documents the day of your appointment (printed out bank statements on black & white or color are considered originals).

This Consulate General provides this service to New England residents ONLY (CT, ME, MA, NH, RI or VT).
If you live in another state, please contact the Consulate of Mexico near you.

> When to schedule your visa appointment:
*Until you gather all the required documents* and
*request it at least one month ahead of your planned travel date.
*visa appointments are only MONDAY through THURSDAY and on the following times: 10:30 am and 12:00 pm.
> How to request a visa appointment:
*send an email to cmxboston@sre.gob.mx, attaching a copy of a utility bill or any correspondence with your name and address on it as proof of residency
*include your telephone number in case we need to contact you,
*indicate how many appointments you are requesting, for whom and provide names and age (only family members).
> On the day of your visa appointment:
*Bring the originals of all the required documents (printed out bank statements on black & white or color are considered originals).
* The processing of the visas can take up to 5 hrs. We thank you for your patience. If the visa is approved, we will stamp it on your passport and return it to you on the same day of your appointment.
* You might need a second visit.
*Please check the requirements listed below* based on the type of visa you want to apply for and the section of Additional Requirements, considering that the presentation of the required documents does not guarantee the visa issuance.
**ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS**
*If you are going to apply for a visa (any type of visa), as someone whom is economically dependent on the primary applicant:
- The primary applicant must have an additional *$1,400.00 USD, after tax per dependent, on top of the economic solvency required for each type of visa.
- Must present the original and a copy of marriage certificate or birth certificate (depending of the case).
- If you present documents issued by a country other than the United States of America or Mexico, these documents must have the appropriate apostille or legalization; as well as its official translation into Spanish
*If you’re going to apply for a Temporary Resident Visa and you plan on working remotely in Mexico, we will REQUIRE a letter from your current employer, indicating that you will continue working for them. Said letter must be signed by your direct supervisor and you must present the original, we do not accept PDF documents.
*Failure to comply with the required documents may delay the approval of your visa application or it can be denied.
* To have an appointment does not guarantee the approval or issuance of the requested visa.
* PASSPORTS HAVE TO BE SUBMITTED AT THE TIME OF YOUR INTERVIEW.
*Additional documents can be required depending on the interview, please come prepared with financial, residency and work information. You must be prepared to explain the purpose of your visit or stay in Mexico to a consular officer.
*For travelers of a third country applying for a tourist visa, you must verify that your US travel authorization is up to date and signed either by your employer or the institution that is sponsoring you. Keep in mind that the first signature is valid for maximum one year.
NON PAID ACTIVITIES VISA (Tourist/business/transit visa)
This type of visa is for you if:
- You are traveling to Mexico for vacation; transit; business meetings; technical activities, artistic, scientific or sport activities; you’re a correspondent journalist or religious minister;
- You intend to remain in Mexico for no more than 180 days and;
- You do not intend to work or get paid for any activity in Mexico.
Requirements:
- Fill out this visa application form (click here to download it). You must sign the application form in front of a Consular Officer.
- Present your original valid passport and a copy of the bio page.
- Bring one passport-size color photo (39 x 31 mm or 2 x 2 inches, front view, no eyeglasses and white background).
- If you are NOT a US citizen, bring the original document that proves your legal residence in the US (I-797, I-20 advance parole, etc.) and a copy
- Pay $54.00 USD in CASH. The fee is for the reception and review of your application, and does not guarantee the visa will be granted. If your visa is denied, and you wish to reapply, a new payment must be submitted each time.
- Comply with at least one of the requirements listed below (*the amounts mentioned below are approximate as they are subject to the official exchange rate of the day of your appointment.):
- a) Original proof of investments or bank statements of the previous 3 months prior to your appointment. The statements must show a minimum balance of *$4,200.00 USDafter taxes.
- b) Original and a photocopy of documents (pay slips, employer’s letter, employment contract, etc.) proving that the applicant has held a job or has received a pension during the previous 3 months prior to your appointment. The statements must show a minimum balance of *$1,400.00USD after taxes.
- c) Foreigners studying regularly at college must present original of verification enrollment letter and proof of employment, pension or scholarship with monthly income equivalent of sixty days of minimum wage valid in Mexico City *$850.00 USD during last three months prior to your appointment.
*The regular NON PAID ACTIVITIES VISA is valid for a time period of 6 months with multiple entries. If you wish to apply for a long term visa you must prove the required income for the last 6 months or prove that you are a frequent international traveler by showing the visas or stamps on your passport as evidence that, during the last year, you have traveled to 3 different countries that are not contiguous to your country of residence.
**Long term visa is subject to the consular interview.
LUCRATIVE ACTIVITIES VISA (Work visa)
If the purpose of your trips is to work and receive a salary or payment in Mexico you will have to apply first at The Secretariat of The Interior (Secretaría de Gobernación).
The employer that hires you has to make the entire process for you at the Mexican Immigration Institute (Instituto Nacional De Migración) in Mexico.
As soon as the NUT Authorization has been approved you must make an appointment.
Requirements:
- Fill out this visa application form (click here to download it).
- Valid passport and copy of the main page.
- One passport size color photo (39 x 31 mm or 2 x 2 inches, front view, no eyeglasses and white background).
- If you are NOT a US citizen, original and copy of the document that proves your legal residence of the US. (I-797, I-20 advance parole, etc).
- The INM’s letter with the authorization NUT number.
- Bring a copy of your contract or a letter from your employer indicating that you will be working for them, it must also indicate the salary and position you will have and how long they are going to contract you.
- Pay $54.00 USD in CASH. The fee is for the reception and study of your application, so, if your visa is denied, the fee must be covered each time you apply.
- Immigration fee $313.00 USD in cash. Applies only for the visa “Visitante con permiso para realizer actividades remuneradas”.
*The visa issued by the Mexican Consulate is valid for 6 months and only one entry, that visa will allow you to enter with a resident status into Mexico. Once in Mexico you have 30 days to go to the nearest INM (Mexican Immigration Institute) office to process your resident card.
PERMANENT RESIDENT VISA is only applicable to retired or pensioned persons or those who have a family relationship with a Mexican person or with a foreign permanent resident person in the degrees of relationship indicated in the immigration legislation itself (son, daughter, father or mother).

- Bring one passport-size color photo (39 x 31 mm or 2 x 2 inches, front view, no eyeglasses and white background).
- If you are NOT a US citizen, original document that proves your legal residence in the US (I-797, I-20 advance parole, etc.) and a copy.
- Pay $54.00 USD in CASH. The fee is for the reception and review of your application, and does not guarantee the visa will be granted. If your visa is denied, and you wish to reapply, a new payment must be submitted each time.
- Comply with at least one of the requirements listed below (*the amounts mentioned below are approximate as they are subject to the official exchange rate of the day of your appointment.):
- Original bank statements for the previous 12 months prior to your appointment. "STATEMENTS MUST BE MONTH BY MONTH". The statements must show a minimum balance of *$279,000.00 USD after taxes.
- Original and a photocopy of documents showing that the applicant has held a job or received a pension during the previous 6 months prior to your appointment. The statements must show a minimum balance *$7,000.00 USD after taxes. A letter from the bank stating since when you have been receiving these deposits can be presented as support, or as additional proof of income if the bank or pension information is incomplete.
- If you have a Mexican son or daughter, his/her original birth certificate and a copy.
*The visa issued by the Mexican Consulate is valid for 6 months and only one entry; this visa will allow you to enter with a resident status into Mexico. Once in Mexico, you have 30 days to go to the nearest Instituto Nacional de Migración (Mexican Immigration Institute, INM) office to process your resident card.
TEMPORARY RESIDENT VISA (MORE THAN 180 DAYS AND LESS THAN 4 YEARS)
- Fill out this visa application form (click here to download it).
- Present your valid original passport and a copy of the bio page.
- Bring one passport-size color photo (39 x 31 mm or 2 x 2 inches, front view, no eyeglasses and white background).
- If you are NOT a US citizen, present the original document that proves your legal residence in the US. (I-797, I-20 advance parole, etc.), and a copy.
- Pay $54.00 USD in CASH. The fee is for the reception and review of your application and does not guarantee the visa will be issued. If your visa is denied, and you wish to reapply, a new payment must be submitted each time.
- Comply with at least one of the requirements listed below (*the amounts mentioned below are approximate as they are subject to the official exchange rate of the day of your appointment.):
- Original bank statements for the previous 12 months prior to your appointment. "STATEMENTS MUST BE MONTH BY MONTH". The statements must show a minimum balance *$70,000.00 USD after taxes.
- Original and a photocopy of documents showing that the applicant has held a job or received a pension during the previous 6 months prior to your appointment. Statement must show a minimum balance of *$4,200.00 USD after taxes. A letter from the bank stating since when you have been receiving these deposits can be presented as support, or as additional proof of income if the bank or pension information is incomplete.
- Marriage with Mexican national, your spouse must be present and submit:
• Original and copy of marriage certificate
• Original and copy of Mexican passport or birth certificate of your spouse.
- If you own a property in Mexico, present the original property deed, showing that the person requesting the visa is the current owner of the property. The minimum value of the property must be *$558,000.00 USD.
*The visa issued by the Mexican Consulate is valid for 6 months and only one entry; this visa will allow you to enter with a resident status into Mexico. Once in Mexico, you have 30 days to go to the nearest Instituto Nacional de Migración (Mexican Immigration Institute, INM) office to process your resident card.
STUDENT VISA

- Present your valid original passport and a copy of the bio page.
- Bring one passport-size color photo (39 x 31 mm or 2 x 2 inches, front view, no eyeglasses and white background).
- If you are NOT a US citizen, present the original document that proves your legal residence in the US. (I-797, I-20 advance parole, etc), and a copy
- Pay $54.00 USD in CASH. The fee is for the reception and study of your application, and does not guarantee the visa will be issued. If the visa is denied, and you wish to reapply, a new payment must be submitted each time.
- Original signed acceptance letter from the school or university you will attend, which must include:
- Full name as it appears in your passport
- Full description of the program, which entails the following
- Level of the course being studied
- Full name of the program
- The Cost
- The dates of the beginning and end of the program.
- Name and signature of the school authority responsible of these educational activities
- Full name of the School or University
- Proof of economic solvency
- Comply with at least one of the requirements listed below (*the amounts mentioned below are approximate as they are subject to the official exchange rate of the day of your appointment.):
- Original bank statements of the previous 3 months prior to your appointment. The statements must contain a minimum balance of *$14,000.00 USD after taxes.
- Original and photocopy of documents demonstrating that the applicant has held a job, has been receiving a pension during the previous 3 months prior to your appointment. The statements must contain a minimum balance of *$1,400.00 USD after taxes. A letter from the bank stating since when have you been receiving these deposits can be presented as support, or additional proof of income, if the bank or pension information is incomplete.
- Solvency can also be proved by original and a photocopy of document attesting that the student has received a full scholarship.
Economic solvency can be satisfied by the student, his or her parents or whoever has the legal custody over the student. The student must be 25 years old or younger.
If the applicant is under 18 years old, both parents should be present to sign the application. If only one parent is present, it is mandatory to submit a notarized authorization (in Spanish or English) from the other parent with a copy of his/her ID.
*People under 18 years old and people requiring legal guardianship, must attend accompanied by an adult or their legal guardian(s). If the companion is someone different than their parents or legal guardian(s), it is mandatory to submit a notarized document in which their parents or legal guardian(s) authorize them to apply for a Visa.
*The visa issued by the Mexican Consulate is valid for 6 months and only one entry; this visa will allow you to enter with a resident status into Mexico. Once in Mexico you have 30 days to go to the nearest Instituto Nacional de Migración (Mexican Immigration Institute, INM) office to process your resident card.
REPLACEMENT OF THE RESIDENT CARD (LOSS/THEFT/DAMAGE)
For this type of visa, you have to inform us when you have all the documentation ready in order for us to give you an appointment. Normally the visa will be ready in maximum of 10 business days and you must appear twice at the consular office.
Replacement of the resident card (loss/theft/damage) requirements:
- Fill out this visa application form (click here to download it). You must sign the application form in front of the Consular Officer.
- Present your original valid passport and a copy of the bio page.
- Bring one passport-size color photo (39 x 31 mm or 2 x 2 inches, front view, no eyeglasses and white background).
- If you are NOT a US citizen, bring the original document of that proves your legal residence in the US. (I-797, I-20 advance parole, etc.), and a copy.
- Pay $54.00 USD in CASH. The fee is for the reception and review of your application, and does not guarantee the visa will be granted. If your visa is denied, and you wish to reapply, a new payment must be submitted each time.
- Original and a copy of the official police report that states the theft, loss or damage of your Mexican Residency Card.
- Copy or a picture of your Residency Card front and back in case of theft or loss, or original in case of damage.
- The Mexican Temporary or Permanent Residency visa that is stamped on your passport.
All these documents are going to be sent to the National Migration Institute and we will have to wait for their approval. The response time depends entirely on them. You will need to provide a contact telephone number in order for us to inform you when you will have to come to the Consulate once more and do the process again but as a recovery of your card.
AFTER ENTERING MEXICO WITH THIS KIND OF VISA, YOU SHOULD GO TO THE NEAREST NATIONAL MIGRATION INSTITUTE OFFICE TO GET YOUR RESIDENT ID.

- If you present a document issued from a country different than Mexico or the United States of America, it must come with an apostille or legalization as applicable; and with an official translation to Spanish.
