Press Release No. 165

Mexico City, June 18, 2020

The Government of Mexico will continue supporting the Mexican beneficiaries of the DACA Program

The United States Supreme Court ruled today that the rescission of the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) Program did not comply with the corresponding administrative procedure. Therefore, such program will continue in effect for thousands of Mexican youth in that country.

The Mexican Foreign Ministry and the Mexican consular network take note of this decision and will remain vigilant about the continuity of the DACA Program. In particular, they will follow up on the renewal process of the permits, as well as any administrative change or legal action that may arise due to the Supreme Court ruling.

The continuity of the DACA Program is a recognition of the value and work of the immigrant community in the United States, particularly in the current context of the COVID-19 pandemic. Approximately 205,000 young Dreamers work in sectors (considered as) essential to protect the health and safety of the United States.

It also highlights the contributions made daily by these young people in the United States. Nationwide, DACA recipients and their families are estimated to pay $ 5.6 billion in federal taxes and $ 3.1 billion in state or local taxes. On the other hand, more than 89% of them are employed and 45.9% have a bachelor's degree or a higher academic degree.

Since the announcement of the establishment of DACA in 2012, the Government of Mexico has promoted that eligible young Mexicans access this Program. The consular network carried out an exhaustive information and promotion campaign in order to maximize the number of Mexicans who took advantage of DACA. To date, more than 500,000 Mexicans have benefited, representing 80% of the total number of beneficiaries.

The Government of Mexico calls upon the Mexican beneficiaries of the DACA Program to approach our 50 consulates in the United States to offer them guidance and receive consular assistance.

Likewise, it recognizes their significant contributions to their places of origin and residence and reiterates that, for them, Mexico will always be their home.
