Mexico has one of the most open economies in the world that offers preferential access to international markets through 13 free trade agreements with more than 50 countries. In addition, the United States, Mexico, Canada Agreement (USMCA), will increase the competitiveness of the North American region through providing certainty to engage in business activities and through the strengthening of Mexico’s position as an important investment market.

Since 1994, Mexico and the US have become important trading partners and allies. In particular, the Mexico-Illinois trade relationship has strengthened in the past years. In ten years, trade between Mexico and Illinois has doubled, reaching 22 billion USD in 2019.

In the same year, Illinois became the 4th trading partner of Mexico amongst the 50 US states and Mexico consolidated as the 2nd export market of Illinois.
