General Information:

Important notice: Please be advised that starting January 1st 2017, foreign nationals requesting a visa will have to pay the fee of $36.00 in order to process their application regardless obtaining or not of the visa

  1. Effective March 1st, 2010, all US Citizens are required to present a valid US Passport * when entering Mexico by air, land or sea.
  2. US Permanent Residents traveling by air, land or sea to Mexico are required to present a valid Permanent Residency Card, as well as a valid passport * from their country of origin or travel document.
  3. Non US Permanent Residents. Starting May 1st, 2010, all foreign nationals who visit Mexico for tourist, business or transit matters will not need a Mexican visa as long as they have a valid US visa in their passport. A valid visa from Canada, Japan, UK or any other country pertaining to the Schengen Space (from May 18, 2016 onwards)
    Any document accrediting permanent residency in Canada, the United States of America Japan, UK or any other country pertaining to the Schengen Space or any Member Country of the Alianza del Pacifico (from July 1st, 2016 onwards)
  4. If the US visa stamped in your passport* already expired, but you have an official document or form proving your legal status in the United States, you should apply for a Non-Lucrative visa at this Consulate. (Please note that I-797 A Forms, Advance Parole Forms, I-20 OR DS-2019 Forms will not be sufficient to enter Mexico)
  5. For Diplomatic and Official visas, please contact the Visa Department at the Mexican Consulate.
  6. It is recommendable that the passports should have at least 6 months validity before expiration.

Appointments:

The Visa Department is open from 11 am to 2pm from Monday to Friday. Please make sure to double check the visa requirements before coming to the Consulate. Important Notice for Traveling Minors. Foreign minors (under 18 years of age) travelling to Mexico alone or with a third party of legal age (grandparent, aunt/uncle, etc.) as visitors (tourists or with a short stay for study purposes up to 180 days) DO NOT REQUIRE authorization or a letter of consent from their parents or guardians. Mexican migratory authorities will allow these minors to leave Mexico at the end of their stay upon presentation of a valid passport. However for Mexicans and foreigners minors under temporary, permanent or temporary student status leaving Mexico without their parents or at least one parent please refer to the following link: http://www.inm.gob.mx/

FMM Forms
If you were in Mexico and did not return the FMM Form (Multiple Immigration Form) to the Immigration Authorities there; you can deliver it to this office during working hours (8:00 to 1:00 pm, Monday to Friday) along with a copy of your passport, (no appointment needed).

Criminal record
If the applicant is subject to criminal process or has been convicted of a serious crime, immigration authorities may decide to refuse the request to enter the country (as defined by national laws on criminal matters or provisions on international treaties or conventions that the Mexican State is party

No lucratives

Visa for visitors without authorization for lucrative activities

This type of visa is for you if:

  • You are traveling to Mexico for vacations, transit, business, technical activities, artistic activities, scientific activities, sport activities, correspondent or journalist, ministers of religion.
  • You will be in Mexico for up to 180 days.
  • You do not have a work authorization.

Requirements:

  • Fill out the Application form, English or Spanish
  • Apply at this Consulate in person
  • Valid passport in original and one photocopy of the pages containing personal information, photograph of bearer and expiration date/extensions.
  • Valid US visa for multiple entries and one photocopy *.
  • Valid I-94 and/or I-20 or J-1 or I-797A Form in original and one photocopy *.
  • One photo passport size (size 1.5 x 1.3/4 inches), in color, no glasses.
  • Proof of address in USA (leasing, utilities bills, etc).
  • Submit one of the following in original and one photocopy:
    • financial records of the last six months of your bank statements with a minimum average balance of $1,450 US dollars per month; or
    • pay roll stubs of the last six months with a minimum income of $500.00 US dollars per month, along with your employment letter specifying your position and salary during the last six months; or,
    • you can also submit official documents proving the ownership of a real estate property/company/business for the last two years.
  • If a company/organization in Mexico is sponsoring or inviting the foreigner, the applicant can submit an original invitation letter ** (the invitation must have a letterhead, address and signed in ink. Scanned, fax or PDF versions will not be accepted)
  • Payment or Consular fee: $36.00 US Dollars.

If you can prove that you are an international traveler or a Mexican citizen´s spouse, ask for the Long-Term Visitor Visa (Visa de Larga Duración).

NOTE:
Minors (under 18 years old) must be accompanied by both parents (or legal guardian) and submit original and official documentation proving filiation (relationship between parents and child) or legal status as a legal guardian.

(**) Invitation Letter

  • Original Invitation Letter from the company/organization based in Mexico must be addressed to the Consulate General of Mexico in Detroit requesting the visa and specifying:
    • Exact purpose or activity and length of time for the trip to Mexico
    • How your expenses will be covered
    • Applicant’s full name
    • Registration number of the company/organization, plus address, complete name and contact information of the company/organization
    • Copy of ID of the person who signed the invitation letter

Temporal Resident

Visa for Temporary Residents

This type of visa is for you if:

You are traveling to Mexico for retirement, investments, professional activities, technical activities, artistic activities, scientific activities, and sport activities or as a Minister of Religion. You will be in Mexico more than 180 days. You do not have a work authorization

Requirements:

  • Fill out the Application form, English or Spanish
  • Apply at this Consulate in person
  • Valid passport in original and one photocopy of the pages containing personal information, photograph of bearer and expiration date/extensions.
  • Valid US visa for multiple entries and one photocopy. *
  • Valid I-94 and/or I-20 or J-1 or I-797A Form in original and one photocopy. *
  • One photo passport size (size 1.5 x 1.3/4 inches), in color, no glasses.
  • Submit one of the following in original and one photocopy: 1) financial records of the last twelve months of your bank statements with minimum average balance of $23,800.00 US dollars per month or; 2) pay roll stubs of the las six months with a minimum income of $1,300.00 US dollars after taxes per month and employment letter specifying your position and salary during the last six months.
    • If a company/organization in Mexico is sponsoring or inviting the foreign national in an specific project or investigation, the applicant must submit an original invitation
    • Letter (**) (the invitation must have a letterhead, address and signed in ink. Scanned, fax or PDF versions will not be accepted).
    • Ministers of religion should submit original letter of “anuencia” (consent) of the Ministry of the Interior (Secretaría de Gobernación) from Mexico when they do not comply with the requirements 1) or 2) above mentioned.
    • If you are temporary’s foreign’s immediate relative living in Mexico; or a Mexican Citizen’s spouse; prove of the relationship and the physical presence of both people will be necessary at the time of the visa’s expedition.


NOTE:

(**) Invitation Letter letter must contain the following:

  1. Applicant’s full name
  2. Letter from the company/organization based in Mexico addressed to the Consulate General of Mexico in Detroit requesting the visa and specifying:
  3. The registration number, plus address, complete name and contact information of the company/organization
  4. Exact purpose or activity and length of time for the trip to Mexico.
  5. How your expenses will be covered. In order to prove that the organization or private institution that invites the applicant has sufficient resources, the applicant must present original documents either from investments or bank statements that show the company has a minimum monthly balance of $95,400.00 USD during the last twelve months.
  6. Copy of ID of the person who signed the invitation letter
  7. The applicant must provide documents that prove that he or she has the experience, capacity, skills or knowledge necessary to carry out the activity for which is invited.

In the event that the institution which invites does not cover the living expenses, then the applicant must provide:

  1. original proof of investments or bank statements with a monthly average balance of $12,000.00 USD during the last twelve months, or
  2. original documents that show the applicant has an employment or a pension with a minimum monthly income of $ 650.00 USD after taxes during the last six months.

Permanent Resident

Permanent Resident

This type of visa is for you if:

  • You are moving to Mexico to be there indefinitely.
  • You do not have a work authorization.

Requirements:

  • Fill out the Application form, English or Spanish
  • Apply at this Consulate in person
  • Valid passport in original and one photocopy of the pages containing personal information, photograph of bearer and expiration date/extensions
  • Valid US visa for multiple entries and one photocopy
  • Valid I-94 and/or I-20 or J-1 or I-797A Form in original and one photocopy *
  • One photo passport size (size 1.5 x 1.3/4 inches), in color, no glasses
  • Submit one of the following in original and one photocopy:
    • Investing or Financial records of your bank statements in US dollars of the last twelve months maintaining a minimum average balance of $119,000.00 US dollars per month; or
    • Retirement pension (SSA) for the last 6 months with a minimum income of $2,400.00 US dollars per month
  • Payment fee: $36.00 US dollars

Lucrative

Visa for visitors with authorization for lucrative activities

• If the purpose of entering into Mexico is working and you will receive a salary or payment right there (lucrative activities), you will have to apply for a prior authorization to the National Institute of Immigration in Mexico www.inami.gob.mx, Upon the approval, you will receive an authorization number (NUT).

As soon as you have the authorization letter, please provide the NUT number to the following e-mail address:

We will reply back to confirm you if it is already registered into our system. Adoption

Visa for the purpose of adoption

If you are traveling to Mexico in order to complete the legal process to adopt a child.

Requirements:.

  • Fill out the Application form, English or Spanish
  • Apply at this Consulate in person
  • Valid passport in original and one photocopy of the pages containing personal information, photograph of bearer and expiration date/extensions.
  • One photo passport size(size 1.5 x 1.3/4 inches), in color, no glasses.
  • Report to be matched with a child (informe de adoptabilidad o pre-asignación) Issued by the “National System for the Full Development of the Family” (Sistema Nacional para el Desarrollo Integral de la Familia, -DIF-). Original and a copy.
  • Letter of acceptance that you will continue processing a child’s adoption issued by the State Authority, legally recognized by the USA Government (similar to the DIF in Mexico). Original and 1 copy.
  • Consular fee: $36.00 US dollars.

Student

Temporary Resident Student

This type of visa is for you if:

  • You are traveling to study in Mexico
  • You do not have a work authorization

Requirements:

  • Fill out the Application form, English or Spanish
  • Apply at this Consulate in person
  • One photo passport size (size 1.5 x 1.3/4 inches), in color, no glasses
  • Valid passport in original and one photocopy of the pages containing personal information, photograph of bearer and expiration date/extensions
  • Valid US visa for multiple entries; at least with 3 months of validity at the time of your filing and one photocopy *
  • Valid I-94 in original and one photocopy *
  • Original Acceptance letter from the School/Institution/University must include:
    • Applicant’s full name Family name and given name as shown at the national passport
    • Level of Study/Degree Specifying degree or type of diploma
    • Field/program of study General academic or subject areas
    • Name of Program/Studies/Course Specific name of the course/program or studies Exchange program, Internship, etc
    • Length of program Date a program begins and date of completion
    • Tuition fee Total fees required, including tuition and home stay if applicable
    • Full Name of the Institution and additional information The letter must include name of the institution, institution’s mailing address, telephone, fax number, e-mail, Web site, and name of contact
    • Others The letter must be issued with letterhead; address and signature in ink of institution Representative
  • Economic Solvency
    • Original and a copy of the last twelve months of bank statements, proving to have a regular income, pension; proof of a scholarship or other financial assistance for at least $ 550.00 US dollars per month during the last 12 months; or
    • Original and a copy of financial investments or bank statements with a minimum average of $ 5,200.00 US dollars during the last 6 months.
  • Sponsor by parents or legal guardian (for students under 25 years old):
    • Original Letter from parents stating that they will be sending their son or daughter the amount of, at least $ 550.00 US dollars per month, besides tuition (Affidavit of support)
    • ID copy of parents (valid passports) and Applicant’s birth certificate (original and copy)
  • Payment or Consular fee $36.00 US dollars

Diplomatic

Diplomatic or Official Visa

Requirements:
• Fill out the Application form, English or Spanish
• Valid passport in original and one photocopy of the pages containing personal information, photograph of bearer and expiration date/extensions

• One photo passport size (size 1.5 x 1.3/4 inches), in color, no glasses
• Original verbal or diplomatic note requesting a visa
Specify purpose, place and duration of the trip (Conference, meeting, or event) to attend in Mexico

Household

HOUSEHOLD FOR RESIDENTS IN MEXICO

Foreigners that have a Non Immigrant Card “Tarjeta de no Inmigrante” or visa to work or live in Mexico for more than six months are eligible to take household goods, that must be inventoried.

The list must be in English and Spanish, typed in single space on white paper, leaving a space of two inches from the top.

Each item must be numbered progressively and on a separate line, beginning with the electronics specifying brand, model and serial number (including kitchen appliances).

  • Small items packed in boxes or crates must be described and numbered in the list as one box (crate) containing clothing, kitchen utensils, etc.
  • Each page of your original list must be signed on the bottom, right-hand corner.
  • The original list, and four copies, must be presented to this Consulate of Mexico to obtain the certificate of household effects.
  • At the beginning of the list, you must write your full name, U.S.A and Mexican address.
  • Fees: $127.00 USD
  • The list will be delivered on the next businnes day.

At the end of the list you must write: “Declaro, bajo protesta de decir verdad, que todos los objetos anteriormente enlistados son usados y de mi propiedad”. ("I declare under oath that the articles listed are used and belong to my property")

Temporary Importation of Equipment

Temporary Importation of Equipment


In order to obtain a Temporary Import Permit for Equipment it is necessary to submit:
• 2 original letters with same content in letterhead from the company or employer of the individual responsible for the equipment, requesting the permit.
• Purpose of the trip.
• State the location where the equipment will be used, and length of time it will remain in Mexico.
• List the name/s of the individual/s responsible for the equipment. Position and what he/she is in charge of.
• Signature of the company Representative’s (Person requesting the permit. Please note it may not be the same as that responsible for the equipment, nor the person transporting it).
In addition, the following must accompany the letter:
• A detailed list of the equipment (brand, model and/or serial number) and should all be printed in company letterhead, with one photocopy. Click here to see a sample.
• Two passport photocopies for the individual responsible for the equipment, as well as his/her Mexican Tourist Visa (if needed because of his/her nationality) and copies of the American visa or US Permanent Resident Card (if foreign national).
