UN DOCUMENTAL DE DÍA DE MUERTOS

Día de Muertos se celebra en comunidades indígenas y mestizas por toda América Latina. Conocidas como Día de Muertos o Todos Santos, estas celebraciones tienen raíces profundas en los cultos a los difuntos de las culturas indígenas pre-hispánicas y en rituales paganos y Católicos. Cada país, región y origen étnico tiene distintas maneras de honrar a sus ancestros, siempre basadas en los mismos fundamentos de responsabilidad y reciprocidad hacía los antepasados.
El Museum of Latin American Art, como parte de su Celebración de Día de los Muertos, presentará La Festividad de los Muertos / Lanii Xtee Tugul. La película presenta la Fiesta de Fieles Difuntos en la comunidad zapoteca de Teotitlán del Valle en Oaxaca, México.
En el documental se investiga como el ritual para celebrar a los muertos -- las preparaciones para las celebraciones, los altares, y la comunión con los difuntos -- fortalece los lazos familiares y de compadrazgo y va creando una red de relaciones que persona a persona abarca a toda la comunidad.
El documental destaca el legado cultural de los antiguos zapotecos. En la Fiesta de Fieles Difuntos, la familia y la comunidad se regeneran en un ritual de coherencia cultural que comparte de la abundancia a manos llenas, provocando un sentido de pertenencia y bienestar.
La Festividad de los Muertos / Lanii Xtee Tugul es la culminación de un proyecto colaborativo de Metamorfosis Documentation Project (representada por Armando Espinosa Prieto y Craig Johnson) con el Museo Comunitario "Balaa Xtee Guech Gulal" en Teotitlán del Valle para documentar la celebración de Día de Muertos en esta comunidad y explorar las relaciones entre los vivos y sus difuntos.

Antes de la proyección del documental, Espinosa Prieto y Johnson presentarán una charla multi-media sobre la historia y el estado actual del Catolicismo indígena, y específicamente como se manifiesta en la celebración de Día de Muertos.

Acera del Museum of Latin American Art (MOLAA)
El Museum of Latin American Art (MOLAA) se fundó en el 1996 en Long Beach, California y sirve al área metropolitano de Los Angeles. MOLAA es el único museo en los Estados Unidos dedicado al arte Latinoamericano moderno y contemporáneo. Desde su inicio, MOLAA se ha doblado en tamaño, y sigue expandiendo su colección permanente, con obras de artistas como Tamayo, Matta, Curz-Diez, Los Carpinteros y Tunga. Ya terminada su expansión física, el foco de MOLAA es fortalecer su posición como una institución multidisciplinaria que provee un dialogo intercultural.
Metamorfosis Documentation Project (MDP)
Metamorfosis Documentation Project (MDP) es una organización sin fines de lucro, basada en el respeto por la riqueza de las tradiciones culturales y motivada por la importancia de estas tradiciones; centrándose en rituales y bailes interculturales de las Américas.
En la primera fase de este Proyecto, MDP y el Comité del Museo Comunitario colaboraron en la documentación de dicha celebración en octubre y noviembre del 2012. Como parte de esta fase del Proyecto, MDP instituyó un programa de aprendices para entrenar a jóvenes de la comunidad que estaban interesados en documentar sus tradiciones. Los dos jóvenes, escogidos por el Comité del Museo Comunitario, contribuyeron con la filmación (mucho de lo que ellos filmaron se utilizó en el documental). También como parte de este taller de cine, y específicamente de pos-producción, los jóvenes participaron en un taller de edición. Esta fase culminó con la producción del documental.
En la segunda fase del Proyecto, MDP y el Comité del Museo colaboraron para crear una exhibición permanente de Día de Muertos en el Museo Comunitario en Teotitlán del Valle. El 4 de mayo de este año, en la Plaza Cívica de Teotitlán del Valle, en conjunto con las autoridades locales, MDP presentó el estreno mundial del documental a la comunidad. Se le entregaron al Museo Comunitario los derechos de reproducción del documental, para el Museo poder vender el documental a sus visitantes. El Museo recibe las ganancias de estas ventas, con los ingresos designados para el mantenimiento y mejoramiento del Museo.
En la tercera fase del Proyecto MDP está presentando charlas en conjunto con proyecciones de documental, ofreciendo oportunidades al público en general para apreciar estos rituales y esta cultura. MDP también está sometiendo el documental a festivales de cine nacionales e internacionales, y presentan el Proyecto en su portal, www.metamorfosisdp.org, con historial, pietaje de video y fotografías.

A DOCUMENTARY FILM ABOUT DAY OF THE DEAD

Día de Muertos (Day of the Dead) is a feast day celebrated in indigenous and mestizo communities throughout Latin America. Known as or Todos Santos (All Souls), the celebrations have deep roots in pre-Hispanic indigenous cultures and in pagan and Catholic rituals. Each country, region and ethnicity has developed different ways of honoring their ancestors, always based on the same principles of responsibility and reciprocity.
As a part of their Día de los Muertos (Day of the Dead) celebration, the Museum of Latin American Art (MOLAA) will present the documentary film, The Feast of the Souls / Lanii Xtee Tugul. The film depicts the Feast of the Faithfully Departed in the Zapotec community of Teotitlán del Valle in Oaxaca, Mexico.
The documentary investigates how this ritual to celebrate the dead – the preparations for the celebration, the altars, and the sharing with the dead – strengthens ties of family and spiritual kinship, creating a network of relationships that extends throughout the community.
Specifically highlighted in the film is the cultural legacy of the ancient Zapotecs. In the Feast of the Faithfully Departed, family and community are regenerated in a ritual of cultural unity that features the generous sharing of abundance, evoking a feeling of belonging and well-being.
The Feast of the Souls / Lanii Xtee Tugul is the culmination of a collaborative project of Metamorfosis Documentación Project (represented by Armando Espinosa Prieto and Craig Johnson) and the "Balaa Xtee Guech Gulal" Community Museum in Teotitlán del Valle to document the celebration of Day of the Dead in this community and to explore the relationships between the living and their dead.
PRESENTATION AND SCREENING: 2:00PM
Armando Espinosa Prieto and Craig Johnson will preface the presentation of the documentary with a multi-media lecture on the history and current state of indigenous Catholicism in the Americas, and specifically how it manifests in the rituals and celebrations of Day of the Dead.

About the Museum of Latin American Art (MOLAA)
The Museum of Latin American Art (MOLAA) was founded in 1996 in Long Beach, California and serves the greater Los Angeles area. MOLAA is the only museum in the United States dedicated to modern and contemporary Latin American art. Since its inception, MOLAA has doubled in size and continues to expand its permanent collection, ranging from works by Tamayo and Matta to Cruz-Diez, Los Carpinteros and Tunga. Metamorfosis Documentation Project (MDP)
The Metamorfosis Documentation Project (MDP) is a non-profit organization, based on a belief in the richness and importance of cultural traditions, focusing on cross-cultural rituals and dances in the Americas.
In the first phase of this Project, MDP and the Community Museum Committee collaborated on the documentation of this celebration in October and November of 2012. During this phase of the Project, MDP instituted an apprentice program to train youths from the community who were interested in documenting their own traditions. The two youths, selected by the Community Museum Committee, assisted with the filming (much of what they filmed was used for the documentary). Also, as part of the film workshop, and specifically of post-production, they participated in an editing workshop. This phase culminated with the production of the documentary.
In the second phase of the Project, MDP and the Museum Committee collaborated to create a permanent Day of the Dead Exhibit in the Teotitlán Community Museum. On May 4 of this year, MDP, together with the Teotitlán del Valle local authorities, presented the world premiere of the documentary to the community at the Civic Plaza. MDP also gifted the Community Museum with rights of reproduction of the documentary, so the Museum can sell the documentary to its visitors. The Museum receives the profits from these sales, with the income designated for the maintenance and improvement of the Museum.
In the third phase of the Project MDP is presenting talks in conjunction with screenings of the documentary, offering opportunities for the general public to appreciate these rituals and this culture. MDP is also submitting the documentary to U.S. and international film festivals and features the Project on its website, www.metamorfosisdp.org, with video footage and photographs.
