Miami, Florida— November 12th, 2020 Press Relase No. 10

CONSULAR INITIATIVES IN REGARDS TO "INTERNATIONAL DAY FOR THE ELIMINATION OF VIOLENCE AGAINST WOMEN”

• Did you know that 35% of women worldwide have experienced physical or sexual violence at some point in their lives.

* In the United States, Mexicans have the Center for information and assistance to Mexicans (CIAM) specialized in calls that, in addition to preventive functions, serves as a point of First Contact to protect people in vulnerable situations.

The Consulate General of Mexico in Miami will exude the color orange up until November 25th to make visible, create action, and in prevention of violence against women and girls in the framework of the "International Day for the elimination of violence against women".

From 4th to 23rd of November, various activities will be carried out throughout the consular representation, including the distribution of infographics in order to visually relay the message. It should be noted that in support of these actions, a table with orange leaves and a mural have been placed in the consulate’s waiting room for visitors to share a message about what gender-based violence means and what they would do to eradicate it.

On the 24th of November, the Consul General Jonathan Chait, will lead a table talk analysis, “Advances and Challenges to Eradicate Violence Against Women”, through Facebook Live @ConsulMexMia, with specialists such as Ivon Mesa, Director of the Coordination Centre for Assistance to Victims of Violence in Miami-Dade County (CVAC); Barbara Muñoz, a Lawyer in family law; and Susan Blond, Director of MujerFla.org

Finally, on November 25th, several videos produced by the Mexican Consulate will be exhibited, exposing for example, the testimony of a survivor of domestic violence and the protective actions exercised to safeguard their integrity.

According to an analysis by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), due to the current pandemic, gender and domestic violence has increased worldwide, particularly in Latin American countries. Data indicates that from 2019 to 2020, it intensified in Mexico, Argentina, Brazil, Colombia, the Dominican Republic Guatemala, Paraguay and Peru, and with the exception of the Dominican Republic, distress calls increased after quarantine.

Remember that any form of violence is considered contrary to human rights and one of the most devastating occurrences in the world today about which very little is reported due to the impunity enjoyed by the perpetrators, and the silence, stigma and shame experienced by the victims.

The Government of Mexico works daily, throughout its representations abroad, with feminist policies and with a gender perspective. Therefore, the Consular Network through its 50 offices in America, including the Consulate General of Mexico in Miami, with actions and programs to support the victims of the crimes of domestic violence and trafficking in persons, through the Window of Integral Attention to the Woman (VAIM), as well as the Program of Legal Assistance to People of Mexican (PALE) in the united States of America.
