THE CONSULATE GENERAL OF MEXICO IN MIAMI PRESENTS CULTURAL PROGRAM OF "DAY OF THE DEAD"
- In 2008, UNESCO declared the celebration as an "Cultural Heritage of Humanity"
The Consulate General of Mexico in Miami and the city of Coral Gables celebrate the fifth edition of the renowned tradition of "Day of the Dead", on Saturday, October 26th, from 5 pm to 9:30 pm at Ponce Circle Park (2810 Ponce de León Blvd., Coral Gables, FL). The event will be headed by the Acting Consul General, Eliel Campuzano, and Coral Gables Mayor, Vince Lago.
The event will be hosted by the well renowned Mexican TV talent Andrea Bazarte, Fer Sagreb, Mariana Logue and Morris. It will also feature the outstanding presence of singers Raquel Bigorra, Dalia Key, and Jazmín Sabyna who will be accompanied by Mariachi Sol de Oro.
The program activities for "Day of the Dead" will include face painting and piñatas for girls and boys; a contest of catrinas and catrines; regional dances by Ameyal, Tloke Nahuake, and Ayala Ballet groups, and will conclude with the traditional procession (parade) made up of people of different nationalities. For the first time, a fun relay race "Catrinas Relay" will be carried out with the RunAdic and Soy Corredora clubs.
Visitors will have the chance to visit some of the cultural and tourist sites of the guest state for the occasion, Aguascalientes, promoted by Verónica González, General Director of the Business & Visitors Bureau; also the home state of the artist and engraver José Guadalupe Posada, creator of La Catrina. They will also be able to experience of "Day of the Dead" with various handicrafts and gastronomy by Mexican entrepreneurs based in Florida.
The Day of the Dead tradition comes to life annually with the gathering of thousands of Mexicans, national and foreign tourists, who meet on November 1 and 2 throughout the country, whether at homes or educational and cultural venues. During the get-together, they promote colors, flavors, and aromas through the elaboration of altars and offerings that honor the memory of loved ones who have died.
