I-5 South Realignment Project Notice

July 18th, 2017

  • The Consulate General of Mexico in San Diego informs to the general public that, according to information provided by the United States General Services Administration (GSA), the US government will temporarily close all southbound vehicle traffic on the I-5 and I-805 freeways and will be rerouted to state route 905 from 03:00 am on Saturday, September 23 until 12:00 pm on Monday, September 25, 2017

  • On that note, access to Mexico through “El Chaparral” will be closed during that period and will be rerouted to Mesa de Otay (via SR-905). Access through Tecate will be also available.

  • The closure of southbound traffic on freeways I-5 y I-805 is due to a project that included the realignment of the I-5 South freeway into Mexico. According to GSA, this project will benefit the cross-border community with the expansion of southbound lanes from 5 to 10 and the construction of 8 new additional NB POV inspection lanes.

  • We highly encourage you to take all necessary and appropriate measures and cross the border ONLY if needed. MTS network will be operating normally and access to San Ysidro through public transportation will not be affected.

  • The Mexican Government continues to engage in order to improve border infrastructure and believes that dialogue and cooperation with the United States are key to share a border that allows fast, safe and organized crossing for goods and people.
