THE CONSULATE GENERAL OF MEXICO IN SAN DIEGO ISSUES THE FIRST BIRTH CERTIFICATES RECOGNIZING GENDER IDENTITY
The Consulate General of Mexico in San Diego issued the first three birth certificates recognizing gender identity to trans people holding Mexican citizenship.
The issuance of these new birth certificates guarantees the identity’s human rights acknowledged by the Mexican Constitution, tackling discrimination and vulnerability which has historically seriously affected this sector of the Mexican population.
Thus, this Consulate adheres to the new guidelines issued by Mexico’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs in order to achieve the right to legal gender recognition which is crucial to the ability of transgender people to leave behind a life of marginalization and enjoy a life of dignity.
With their new birth certificates, the three applicants also requested their Mexican passport with their new self-perceived gender identity.
In this regard, the Consul General of Mexico in San Diego, Carlos González Gutiérrez, said that the Consulate is a house of service, space free of discrimination of any kind, whose duty is to promote, respect, protect and guarantee the freedom and human rights for all Mexican nationals, without exceptions.
