Press Release

THE CONSULATE GENERAL OF MEXICO IN SAN DIEGO WELCOMES THE STATE OF YUCATAN

Following up on Puente a México’s tourism project (Bridge to Mexico), today and Saturday (July 15-16) the state of Yucatan, with its rich history, culture and gastronomy, will be featured at the Consulate General of Mexico in San Diego.

Puente a México is an open invitation for every Mexican state to take advantage of the Consulate General’s location in Little Italy’s neighborhood, as a dynamic platform to promote, for a weekend, every month, their art, culture, gastronomy, services and tourist destinations.

With key allies and partners such as Cross Border Xpress (CBX) and Mexican airline Volaris, Bridge to Mexico will allow Sandiegans to discover Yucatan as an outstanding tourism destination through exhibitions, regional food and craft beer tastings.

Today, the Consul General of Mexico, Carlos González Gutiérrez, along with Yucatan’s secretary of Tourism, Michelle Fridman Hirsch, led the ribbon-cutting ceremony of the free admission exhibition in which regional handcrafts, photographs and clothing will be appreciated by thousands of passers-by, from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.

“Puente a México will allow more Californians to discover the breathtaking landmarks of Yucatan and reinforce its image as a powerhouse in the fields of art, culture, gastronomy and tourism. It will be a platform to further strengthen its reputation as one of the best options for the international traveler”, said Consul General González Gutiérrez.

The state will participate in Little Italy’s Farmers’ Market, on July 16 and 23, from 8:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m., in a space displaying guayaberas and traditional hammocks, with support of the Yucatecan Institute of Entrepreneurs (IYEM acronym in Spanish).

"We’re very happy to present the great diversity of Yucatan to one of the most powerful markets in the world with which we are increasingly connected," said Michelle Fridman, head of Tourism Yucatan, in regards to the event.

Furthermore, the state will hold an exhibition in the "House of Mexico" in Balboa Park, also located in San Diego, from July to September 2022, where handcrafts, photographs, maps and traditional clothing will be exhibited.

“For CBX it is very important to join this type of effort, because our cross-border bridge is the gateway to Mexico. In 2022, Cross Border Xpress will connect more than four million users heading to 39 destinations in Mexico, from San Diego, California and vice versa”, said the CEO of CBX, Jorge Goytortúa.

To end on a high note, Yucatan will be part of Casa México at Comic Con, from July 21 to 24, where at least 50 thousand visitors are expected.

Every week Yucatan receives an average of 179 domestic flights and 24 international flights with 33,806 seats available. From January to May 2022, national flights continued growing in comparison to the records prior to the pandemic, with a total of 647,233 tourists arrivals exceeding the figure for the same period in 2019 (636,381 tourists). During 2022, the arrival of 103 cruise ships with 197,000 passengers is expected.
