Press Release
AUTHORITIES FROM THE THREE LEVELS OF THE MEXICAN GOVERNMENT WELCOME THE REOPENING OF THE PEDESTRIAN WEST CROSSING FACILITY (PED-WEST) AND ANNOUNCE MEASURES TO ENSURE AN AGILE, SAFE AND ORDERLY FLOW OF USERS OF THE PORT OF ENTRY
Given the decision of the US government to reopen the Pedestrian West Crossing Facility (Ped-West) at the San Ysidro Port of Entry (POE), closed to regular traffic since April 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the three levels of the Mexican Government in the Tijuana-San Diego border are working together to ensure that the crossings on the Mexican side are carried out in a safe, orderly, and humane manner.
As announced, the West Pedestrian Crossing will open on January 9, 2023, from 6:00 AM to 2:00 PM, processing people who have the necessary documentation to enter US territory (the pedestrian gate will operate only for northbound traffic).
This announcement activated a working group with representatives from the Government of the State of Baja California, the City of Tijuana, and the National Institute of Migration (INM by its acronym in Spanish); with the support of the state and municipal police, the National Guard, INDAABIN (as the administrator of the port building on the Mexican side), the Tax Administration Service, and the Consulate General of Mexico in San Diego as facilitator and liaison with the US immigration authority at the local level.
The regional authorities of the three levels of the Government of Mexico agreed on specific actions for a coordinated response to guarantee the safe passage of pedestrian port users and prevent irregular settlements that could hinder its operation.
These actions include increasing security on the Mexican side, through the presence of specialized agents in the area to facilitate orderly flows in a friendly, efficient, and humane way, as well as port improvements to receive travelers in optimal conditions.
The three levels of Government at the regional level welcomed the reopening of the pedestrian crossing, which will strengthen social and economic relations on both sides of the border and will facilitate the flow of travelers who cross the border daily for work, school, or other activities.
