MEXICAN & LATINO STUDENTS RECEIVE COLIBRÍ MX SCHOLARSHIPS 2023
In the last four years, the ColibríMX
Scholarship Program has benefited 340
students with a total of $354,500 dollars.
A total of 83 Mexican or Latino students received yesterday $91,000 dollars from ColibríMX Scholarships.
The ColibríMX Scholarship is aimed at serving first-time college students enrolling in the fall 2023 semester with a GPA of 2.5 or higher who were able to demonstrate Mexican or Latino origin, financial need, and residence in San Diego County.
In the last four years, the ColibríMX Scholarship Program has benefited 340 students with a total of $354,500 dollars.
This year, 83 students were awarded grants. Most of them received $1,000 dollars each. To further assist those with greater need, eight undocumented students were eligible to obtain a scholarship of $1,500 dollars in the 2023 edition of the program. In addition, a $5,000 dollar grant was awarded to the student who obtained the top ranking.
“Four years ago, ColibríMX was born with two main goals in mind: On the one hand, we want to do our share and help Latino students get to College; on the other hand, we want to mobilize the community around the Colibrí campaign. If we don't help ourselves, no one is going to help us.”, said Carlos González Gutiérrez, Cónsul General of México in San Diego.
ColibríMX is now a reality thanks to the generosity and efforts of many people. First, the Consulate General of Mexico acknowledges the Instituto de los Mexicanos en el Exterior (IME), from Mexico’s Foreign Affairs Ministry. Every year, it provides “seed money” to start the fundraising effort. This year, its contribution was 20% of the campaign’s funds. The vast majority of the resources that finance ColibríMX come from non-governmental sponsors, including donors from both sides of the border.
The Consulate General of Mexico has partnered with the Metropolitan Area Advisory Committee on Anti-Poverty (MAAC), a prestigious local non-profit organization whose vision and mission align with the goals of this program.
