AND THE CONSULATE GENERAL OF MEXICO IN SAN DIEGO
PRESENTED THE ANONYMOUS REPORT PHONE LINE IN THE US

San Diego, CA.- January 8th, 2014. In an effort to outreach Mexican citizens who live in the United States and tourists who were in Baja California during the past December holidays, the Secretary of Public Safety of the State of Baja California and the Consulate General of Mexico in San Diego, presented again the anonymous report telephone number that could be dialed from the United States: 1 866 201 5060

 

Marco Antonio Sotomayor, Undersecretary of Public Safety System of the State of Baja California, explained that this tool has been operating since May 21st 2009, and provides attention to Mexican citizens living along the border.  This line has proven to be an effective crime fighting tool in both countries.

 

Some of the reports received through this phone line, resulted in detentions of foreign criminals, drug seizures, weapon secured and stolen vehicles recuperated to their legitimate owners.

 

These actions have been possible thanks to the coordination held also with the General Consulates of Mexico in San Diego, in Los Angeles; and also in Yuma and Calexico, for the benefit of Mexican and US citizens living in the United States.

 

Sotomayor, made clear that the media is key for this program in order to spread the word of this joint effort with the social sector and the Government of both countries.

 

Some of the actions taken by the Secretary of Public Safety of Baja California, has included the distribution of flyers in the International crossing points from Tijuana, Mexicali and Tecate, so all people and tourists returning to their countries of origin will know about this important tool.

 

Figures of the results shown since the implementation of this program on the anonymous report phone line 1 866 201 5060 are:

•    333 phone calls received from the United States
•    From 100% calls, 59% were real cases related to crimes.
•    40% of the calls were related from people seeking for information and 1% were pranks.

 

Effective actions against crime through the implementation of this phone line, among others:

•    The rescue of a kidnapped migrant.
•    Apprehension of fugitives reported from the North American legal justice system, hiding in Baja California.
•    Seizure of drugs, weapons and ammunitions.
•    Investigation and detection of vehicles with the intention to travel from Mexico to the United States with drugs.
