Marriage Requirements and Procedure (Mexican Consulate in San Diego)
Both spouses must be Mexican nationals. You must present the following at the Consulate:
- Application Form. Must be filled out by hand in legible block letters and signed by both spouses. (Annex A)
- Signature Ratification Form. Filled out and signed by the spouses and the witnesses. (Annex B)
- Original Mexican Birth Certificate or Valid Mexican Passport for each spouse, plus two letter-size copies of each.
- Valid Official Identification (with name, photo, and signature) for each spouse, plus two letter-size copies of each. Only Mexican Passport, Matrícula Consular, or INE are accepted.
- Statement from Four Adult Witnesses (two for each spouse) who know the couple, attesting that there is no legal impediment to the marriage (Annex C).
- Valid Official ID for Each Witness (with name, photo, and signature) plus two letter-size copies of each.
- Agreement Between Spouses regarding current and future property (marital property regime or separation of property). (Annex D or E)
- If either spouse was previously married, they must present a certified copy of the divorce decree, annulment, or death certificate (as applicable) plus two letter-size copies.
- If marriage involves minors, written consent from parents or guardians before a Notary Public, valid official ID (with name, photo, signature) of each parent, and two letter-size copies.
- Payment of $62.00 USD as the consular fee.
- Payment of $19.00 USD per certified copy.
- Medical Certificate stating that the spouses do not suffer from syphilis, tuberculosis, or any chronic, incurable, contagious, or hereditary disease. (Valid for 15 days.)
Procedure
- Submit the completed application and supporting documents Monday through Friday, 8:00–10:00 AM. No appointment is necessary to submit documents.
- Once the application and documentation are received, you will be given an appointment for the spouses and the witnesses to appear. If there is no legal impediment, the date for the marriage ceremony will be set.
- Obtain the Medical Certificate within 15 business days before the scheduled marriage date.
Additional Notes:
• All applications are subject to document review for approval. Additional documents may be requested.
• Applicants must appear in person.
• All photocopies presented must be clearly legible, and for IDs, the photo and signature must be clear on both sides where applicable.
