Requirements for Passport

REQUIREMENTS (For people 18 years of age or older)

  1. Prove your identity with one of the following original identifications. The name should be identical in all its letters with the birth certificate or document that proves nationality

The photograph must fully match the current physical features

The documents must be submitted in original, in good condition, not entitled, without erasures or amendments

  1. Voting card with photograph, issued by the INE or IFE after the year 2000.
  2. Mexican passport (except passports with observations and type A, B passports or passports issued before 2006).
  3. Consular Registration, valid or expired (except registrations with observations or issued before 2005)
  4. National Military Service Card (released or unreleased pre-booklet)
  5. Digital proof of registration status (valid for 3 months from the date of issue)
  6. Driver's license/ID issued by the California Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) issued after 1995.
  7. Valid driver's license/ID from other U.S. states with "high security measures."
  8. Permanent Resident Laser Card valid or expired
  9. Temporary Resident Card, valid or expired
  10.  Employment Authorization Card valid or expired
  11. Laser border crossing card, valid or expired
  12. Trusted traveler cards like Global Entry and Sentri
  13. U.S. visa stamped in passport, whose biographical data matches the name on passport.
  14. Professional License (Cédula professional) old or new format
  15. Mexican Professional University Degree, unframed and in scannable format.
  16. Basic or Middle School Certificate issued by the SEP with a cancelled photograph with a stamp and verification measures. If the certificate does not have a photograph, it must be accompanied by a certificate of studies issued by the state education authorities that includes the person's photograph.
  17. High school certificate or equivalent, issued in Mexico
  18. Valid school credential issued by a U.S. institution in San Diego County.
  19. Proof of studies with photography. U.S. minors may submit the official transcript of the school or school district, with full name and photograph canceled by the official seal. An example can be requested at the Consulate
  20. Mexican Postal Service Credential (new generation)
  21. IMSS Credential with Photo
  22. ISSSTE credential with photo
  23. ISSFAM Credential with Photo
  24. Mexico Armed Forces Credential
  25. INAPAM-INSEN Credential
  26. Citizen Identity Card / Personal Identity Card
  27. Declaration of Mexican Nationality by Birth (Declaratoria de Nacionalidad)
  28. Valid U.S. passport with name as it appears on Mexican birth certificate
  29. "Safety Kids" credential (valid and only for minors)
  30. Letter from the pediatrician signed, with a photo of the minor canceled by the pediatrician's seal and adding a professional license. (Only for children under 7 years old). An example can be requested at the Consulate
  31. Valid U.S. passport for dual nationals.
  32. In the absence of the aforementioned documents, present a Certificate of Origin and Identity issued by the municipal authority with a photograph, with information established by the SRE. An example can be requested from the Consulate
  1. Cover the corresponding payment in accordance with the provisions of the Federal Law of Rights

IMPORTANT:

If the nationality of the applicant cannot be accredited after consulting the databases or systems to which the Consulate has access, one of the following documents must be presented to process a passport, consular registration and INE

  1. Birth certificate issued by the Mexican civil registry office or consular office
  2. Declaration of Mexican nationality by birth
  3. Naturalization Letter
  4. Marriage certificate

 

VALIDITY

Abroad, Mexican passports are valid for one (only for children under three years of age), three, six or ten years (only for those over 18 years of age).

 

DELIVERY TIME

Once you come to your appointment at the Consular Office and meet all the requirements, the passport is delivered in person on the same day of your appointment.

LAST NAME OF SPOUSE

If your spouse's last name appears on your proof of identity, you will need to submit the original marriage certificate if you were married in the United States or Mexico (no excerpt).

Similarly, if you want your spouse's last name to appear in your passport, you must present the original of the original marriage certificate if you were married in the United States or Mexico (not extract).

It is recalled that in every Mexican passport the name or names, first and second surnames of the applicants are recorded. The spouse's surname is included in a special section of the passport.

 

 

 

 

PASSPORT RENEWAL FOR ADULTS

For the renewal or exchange of a passport, you must meet the following requirements:

  1. Appear in person at the corresponding Consular Office with a previously scheduled appointment, which can be obtained through the telephone service or by sending a WhatsApp message to the number +1 (424) 309-0009 or online at https://citas.sre.gob.mx/
  2. Present passport to renew. Passports can only be renewed if they were issued in the delegations or passport offices in national territory after 1996 and after 2006 if they were issued in a Mexican Representation abroad.
  3. Cover the corresponding payment in accordance with the provisions of the Federal Law of Rights (Click here to see the list of RATES)

If the passport has any restrictions or observations, it must comply with the requirement indicated; if it is NON-EXCHANGEABLE, you must present the complete documentation as if it were a first-time case.

What if I can't find my old passport or it was stolen? In these cases, you must submit the report of loss or theft to the corresponding authority or draw up a report at the time of processing your new passport at the Consulate and present the requirements as if it were an issuance for the first time.

IMPORTANT:

REQUIREMENTS FOR MINOR PASSPORTS:

  1. Appear in person in the company of the minor before the corresponding Consular Office with a previously scheduled appointment, which can be obtained through the telephone service or WhatsApp, at +1 (424) 309-0009 or online at https://citas.sre.gob.mx/.
  2. Prove the identity of the minor, presenting the ORIGINAL of one of the following documents:
  • Certificate with photograph and security measures of elementary, middle or high school education issued by the Mexican authority
  • Certificate of studies with photograph issued by the Ministry of Public Education.
  • Student ID issued by the local educational institution accompanied by the  official transcript. If the name of the minor on the credential does not faithfully match the birth certificate, they must request from the authorities of the school district where the minor studies, a letter with the full name and photograph of the minor that must be accompanied by the official transcript.
  • Official VALID identification issued by the authority of the United States of America
  • United States of America Green Card
  • Valid Passport issued by the authority of the United States of America.
  • For children under 7 years of age, a certificate with a photograph and stamp from a medical institution or a private doctor in the place where the minor lives. If the document was issued in national territory, it must be accompanied by the pediatrician's professional license.
  1. Both parents or those who exercise parental authority (sole custody) must appear and present valid official identification with photograph and signature, the names on the identification must appear as they are on the birth certificate of the minor, without exceptions, omissions and in the correct order. Accepted IDs are:

-Mexican passport or passport from your country of origin (in case of being a foreigner)

-Consular registration

-Credential to vote with photograph (IFE)

-Foreign valid passport (book no credential)

-ID or driver´s license from the U.S.

If your spouse's last name appears on your proof of identity, you will need to submit the original marriage certificate if you were married in the United States (no excerpt) or Mexico.

If one of the parents is deceased, the original death certificate must be presented.

If the father or mother or the person exercising parental authority resides outside the district, he or she must send an OP7 permit processed at the passport office or consulate closest to his or her home.
