37 Festival Internacional de Cine de Toronto
El Festival de Cine de Toronto proyectará cuatro películas mexicanas
El Festival Internacional de Cine de Toronto (TIFF, por sus siglas en inglés), que se realizará aquí del 6 al 16 de septiembre, proyectará cuatro películas de producción mexicana, una chilena, donde actúa Gael García Bernal, y una española donde actúa Daniel Giménez Cacho, dentro de su programación de 372 filmes.
Las películas son:
“Post Tenebras Lux”, de Carlos Reygadas, quien ganó el premio al Mejor Director en el pasado Festival de Cannes y en el Festival Internacional de Cine de Lima. Programa Wavelengths. Proyecciones: septiembre 12, 13 y 16.
“Come out and play” (Juego de niños), del director bielorruso conocido como Makinov, producida por Canana (de Gael García y Diego Luna). Retoma una película española de trama similar, sobre un pueblo donde sólo habitan niños. Fue filmada en Quintana Roo y es protagonizada por Daniel Giménez Cacho. Estreno mundial. Programa Midnight Madness. Proyecciones: septiembre 13, 14 y 15.
“Here comes the devil” (Ahí va el diablo), una producción México-Estados Unidos, dirigida por el español Adrián García. Trata de una familia que vacaciona en Tijuana y que sufre la pérdida temporal de sus dos hijos, quienes al ser encontrados se comportarán en forma extraña. Programa Vanguard. Proyecciones: septiembre 11, 12 y 16. Programa
“La Sirga”, producción México-Colombia-Francia, del director colombiano William Vega, se centra en una apartada área de Colombia. Programa Discovery. Proyecciones: septiembre 11 y 14.
El actor mexicano Gael García Bernal, quien asistirá a este festival, es el protagonista de la película “No”, del chileno Pablo Larraín, que retoma el plebiscito de 1988 que derrocó a Augusto Pinochet. Programa Special Presentatons. Proyecciones: septiembre 10 y 11.
La 37 edición de este festival de cine incluye la película “Blancanieves”, del español Pablo Berger, protagonizada por Daniel Giménez Cacho y Maribel Verdú. Programa Discovery. Proyecciones: septiembre 8, 10 y 14.
En este festival se instalará un stand del Instituto Mexicano del Cinematografía (Imcine) para promover las cintas mexicanas.
En total el TIFF proyectará 372 películas (289 largometrajes y 83 cortometrajes) de 72 países. Las proyecciones incluyen 146 estrenos mundiales. Mayores detalles de la programación en: www.tiff.net.

Fiesta con motivo del 202 Aniversario de la Independencia de México
El Cónsul General Mauricio Toussaint dará el tradicional “Grito de Independencia” en la ceremonia conmemorativa a la que ha sido invitado por el Comité Organizador de las Fiestas Patrias, en el marco del festival que se celebrará con motivo del 202 Aniversario de la Independencia de México.
El festival se realizará el sábado 15 de septiembre, de 12:00 a 8:00 p.m., en Nathan Philips Square (City Hall Toronto) y la Ceremonia Oficial del Grito será a las 6:00 p.m.

Mexican Chefs Win Iron Chef Competition at 2012 Hot & Spicy Festival
Mexican chef Jonatan Gómez-Luna Torres and his assistant Julio Mora Mackey won the Iron Chef competition at the Hot & Spicy Festival. The festival took place on July 21 and 22 at the Harbourfront Centre in Toronto.
This is the seventh consecutive year that Mexico has been represented at this competition and the second time that a Mexican chef has won.
On Saturday, July 21, the semifinal round of the international competition featured chefs Gómez Luna and Mora Mackey going head to head with Canadian chef Nick Liu, in front of a large crowd.
The Mexican chefs served up a typical Mexican dish of chicken in an adobo sauce made with traditional Mexican ingredients such as dry chiles and spices along with local Ontario greens. The chefs used currants as a secret ingredient, which the jury correctly identified. The dish won Gómez Luna positive comments and reviews from the judges, and was sent to the final round.
On the jury for the semi final round were Elizabeth Baird, writer and food columnist at the Toronto Sun and SunMedia; Steven D'Souza, from CBC Television; the Mexican Claudia Huerta, owner of El Cilantro Catering; and Melanie Fernandez, Director of Community Programmes at Harbourfront.
In the final round on Sunday July 22, the Mexican chefs faced American chef Ross Warhol. The Mexican chefs spent 30 minutes preparing a dish of quail in a delicate mole, served with a purée of sweet potato with vanilla, cinnamon and maple syrup, using garlic as a secret ingredient.
Once the judges finished their deliberations, Jonatán Gómez Luna was declared the triumphant winner, and the audience filled the kitchen area to congratulate the Mexican chef.
The Consul General Mauricio Toussaint attended the event accompanied by the Deputy Consul Santiago Mateos, the Coordinator of Community Affairs and the Institute for Mexicans Abroad (IME) Adriana Becerra, and the Consulate's Cultural Attaché, Gerardo Ochoa Sandy.
The event was covered by the local CBC News, Toronto's main newspapers and electronic news sources, the Consulate's webpage and social media such as Facebook and Twitter.
