Registration for Mexican Nationality

Individuals born in the United States or in any other country, who are children of a Mexican father or mother, are entitled to register for Mexican nationality.

Requirements to Register as a Mexican:

To complete this process, you must schedule an appointment through the MiConsulado system:

Select the appointment option: “REGISTRO CIVIL-REGISTRO”

When booking online, you will be asked to upload digital copies of the required documents. Once validated, your appointment will be confirmed.

Important Information:

  • If “Registro Civil-Registro” does not appear, appointments are full. New appointments open on the 15th and 30th of each month.
  • Every birth registration requires a scheduled appointment.
  • One appointment must be scheduled per child.
  • A separate appointment is required for the Mexican passport application.
  • This service is free of charge.

Note: The first birth certificate is free. Additional copies cost $20 USD (cash or money order only).

Important: All documents will be reviewed during the appointment. If any document is missing or incorrect, the registration cannot proceed.

Checklist of Requirements:

  • Two letter-size photocopies of all original documents, per child.
  • Completed Birth Registration Application Form (Click to Download).
  1. Presence of the Person Being Registered
  • The child must appear in person with both parents at the Consulate.
  • Adults may complete the registration themselves.
  • A Mexican birth certificate for the parent(s) must be presented.
  1. Original U.S. Birth Certificate (long form showing the nationality and place of birth of the parents). If the mother uses her married name, the marriage certificate must be presented.

If the birth certificate was issued in another country, it must be legalized or apostilled, and translated into Spanish if it is not in English.

  1. Valid Official IDs for All Parties Involved
  • Minors may present:
    • Doctor’s letter with photo, on letterhead, with stamp
    • School ID with photo
    • U.S. passport
  • Parents must present one valid Mexican government-issued ID:
    • Passport
    • Consular ID (Matrícula Consular)
    • Voter ID (INE/IFE)

If the mother uses her married name, the marriage certificate must be presented. Foreign parents must present a valid passport.

  • If a Mexican Parent is Deceased
  • The original death certificate must be provided.
