Consulate General of Mexico in New York participates in Governor Cuomo’s Announcement of NaturalizeNY Program
New York, NY July 15th, 2016
On July 14th, Andrew Cuomo, New York State’s Governor, announced the partnership agreement creating “NaturalizeNY”, program which will pay the application fee for low-income immigrants seeking to become U.S. citizens.
NaturalizeNY, is an initiative of the state government in collaboration with the Robin Hood Foundation, SUNY Albany, Standford University, George Mason University, and the New York Daily News. The program consists of a lottery system that will benefit 2,000 Green Card holder immigrant New Yorkers, that are eligible to become citizens but can’t pay the $680 aplication fee.
As part of the program, the lottery winners will receive free legal assistance, English classes, eligibility evaluations and preparation for citizenship test.
During the announcement, the governor mentioned that in the State of New York, there are 915,000 residents eligible for citizenship, including 654,720 in New York City.
Among the assistance, there was state authorities, NGO’s, members of the diplomatic community and accredited officials from the City, as well as the Consulate of Mexico in New York.
