Consul General Diego Gómez Pickering, Welcomes 50 Girls from Puebla participating in the 1,000 girls-1,000 futures Program

  • Consul General, Diego Gómez Pickering welcomed 50 girls from the state of Puebla who came to New York as part of their participation in the 1,000 Girls-1,000 Futures Program, implemented by the US-Mexico Foundation, with the purpose of linking them with the STEM field (science, technology, eingenieering and mathematics).

On July 18th, Consul General of Mexico in New York, Diego Gómez Pickering, received 50 girls from Puebla that are visiting New York as part of the 1,000 girls-1,000 futures program, implemented by the US Mexico Foundation with the purpose of linking them with the STEM field (science, technology, eingenieering and mathematics). In september 2015, a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) was singed between the New York Academy of Sciences (NYAS), the Government of Puebla, the US-Mexico Foundation and the Consulate, as an honorary witness, to launch this activity. 

This is the first program of its kind, developed in Mexico and that is part of the Global STEM Alliance, a coalition of organizations that seeks to empower youth to pursue a career in this field. In this regard, one of the goals of this visit is for the girls to participate in the Global STEM Alliance Summit and to continue developing their English skills studying at the City University of New York (CUNY).  

Consul Pickering underlined the importance of programs of such nature, that contribute to build bridges between Mexico and the United States; as well as to empower and open a diversity of educational opportunitites that will lead to the development of our country. Rebeca Vargas, President and CEO of the Foundation, emphasized the importance of gender equality in the workfield. She presented how these youth have been connected with a personal mentor and how, since the program started in 2015, the girls have attended English courses and leadership building activities. Some of the beneficiaries talked about their personal experience and the positive impact its had in their lives.
