PRESS RELEASE

On July 22nd, 2016, Mr. Diego Gómez-Pickering, Consul General of Mexico in New York, visited Syracuse University and the Maxwell School of Citizenship and Public Affairs as part of a working visit to upstate. He greeted Chancellor and President Kent Syverud; Vice Chancellor and Provost Michele Wheatly; Dean of University College, Bea González; Deb McGraw, Associate Director of the English Language Institute; Geraldine de Berly, Senior Associate Dean; Dean of the Maxwell School, David M. Van Slyke; Professor Dr. Rafael Fernández de Castro; Director of the Moynihan Institute of Global Affairs, Margaret Hermann; and other outstanding scholars.

 The Consul General applauded Maxwell School excellence, leadership and dedication to advancing knowledge and fostering student success through outstanding innovative, interdisciplinary teaching and research in the social sciences, public policy, public administration, and international relations. 

He also highlighted that universities and other higher education institutions are strategic partners in boosting research and innovation projects and they are necessary to support the formation of human capital. He expressed that Mexico is aiming to give important steps to gain position in the global knowledge economy by establishing cooperative ties between the skilled diaspora and centers of knowledge-generation in Mexico.

As part of his duties, Consul General Gómez Pickering is interested in strengthening the relationship with the academic institutions in order to contribute to the growing cooperation between Mexico and the United States, with a special focus on education and research, and to the enrichment of the strong cultural, economic and social ties between both countries.

During his visit, Consul General Gómez Pickering met a group of students from Mexico that is participating in the intensive English language courses in the framework of Proyecta 100,000 initiative. He recognized that Syracuse University is a great academic partner that is helping to fulfill the goals of the Bilateral Forum on Higher Education, Innovation and Research (FOBESII) between Mexico and the United States.
