On July 26th, the Consulate General of Mexico in New York introduced the community the mexican-american boxer and world champion in the featherweight division, Leo Santa Cruz. This is his first visit to New York City to fight next Saturday July 30th at Barclays Center in Brooklyn, to defend his world title in the featherweight category.
Not only has Leo’s story led him to be a successful boxer in the ring and to become ESPN’s #1 ranked boxer in this category, but his trajectory has also resulted in a source of inspiration for young migrants that with tenacity and perseverance they can achieve their goals. Saturday’s fight will have a special meaning to Leo, since he will dedicate it to his dad, his trainer, who is fighting cancer.
Consul General Diego Gomez Pickering acknowledged that we are now facing a complex challenge due to the anti-immigrant discourse in the United States; however, he recalled that the United States became the great nation it is today, recognizing the human capital and talent that immigrants bring to this country.
This meeting was held in collaboration with the organization Mano a Mano: Mexican Culture without Borders. Executive Director, Juan Carlos Aguirre, said Leo Santa Cruz is an example of the existing talent in the mexican-american community and is confident Leo Santa Cruz will continue to exercise his leadership to raise awareness about the importance of practicing sports.
