Citizens and permanent residents of the United States or Canada, as well as foreign nationals with a valid U.S. visa, DO NOT need a visa to enter Mexico for tourism, transit, or business purposes, provided that their stay does not exceed 180 days and they do not engage in remunerated activities.
To enter Mexico, travelers must present a valid passport at the port of entry (air, sea, or land) along with one of the following documents:
- A valid U.S. visa stamped in their passport
- A U.S. Permanent Resident Card (Green Card)
- A Canadian Permanent Resident Card
Upon arrival, the Mexican immigration authority will issue the Multiple Immigration Form (FMM), which will indicate the authorized length of stay.
For stays longer than 180 days for business, studies, residency based on income, employment, or permanent residence, as well as for the renewal of such permits, it is necessary to apply for a Temporary or Permanent Resident Visa.
Obtaining a Mexican visa allows travel to Mexico but does not guarantee entry into the country.
