Department for Documentation of Foreigner Nationals (Visas Department)
GENERAL INFORMATION
All foreign nationals traveling to Mexico by air, land or sea require a valid passport when entering the country, regardless of their country of origin.
Additionally, foreign nationals traveling to Mexico require a visa stamped in their passport unless they qualify under a specific visa waiver agreement. Citizens of the following countries are required to have a valid Mexican visa upon entering the country:
If you’re traveling to Mexico for tourism, exploring business or transit purposes, you do not require a visa if you are a citizen or legal permanent resident of any of the following countries: Canada, the United States, Japan, the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, as well as the countries of the Schengen Area. All individuals in this category are required to present their valid residency permit of any of these countries along with their passports. Both documents must be valid –with a minimum of 6 months- aside the duration of their entire stay in Mexico
If you have a valid visa issued by the United States of America you do not require a visa to enter Mexico for tourism, exploring business or transit purposes. All individuals in this category are required to present their valid US visa along with their passports. Both documents must be valid for the duration of their entire stay in Mexico.
If the US visa stamped on your passport is expired, you must apply for a Mexican visa at the Mexican embassy or consulate closest to your place of residence. EAD cards, I-797 A Forms, Advance Parole Forms, I-20 Forms or DS-2019 are not valid forms to request permission to enter Mexico.

- On the day of your appointment a consular official will review your file, conduct a consular interview and capture your biometric information. In some cases, additional documents or information might be required. In accordance with current Mexican immigration laws and regulations, the consular interview will be conducted in either English or Spanish.

- Business, studies, work permits, temporary and permanent residents do need a visa.

- After you are granted a Mexican visa you will be able to request permission to enter the country at a Port of Entry. (Non-Lucrative) Visa for visitors without authorization for lucrative activities
This type of visa is for you if:
- You are traveling to Mexico for vacations, transit, business, technical activities, artistic activities, scientific activities, sport activities, correspondent or journalist, ministers of religion.
- You will be in Mexico for up to 180 days.
- You don´t have a work authorization.
Requirements:

- Fill out the Application form,English or Español
- Valid passport in original and one photocopy of the pages containing personal information, photograph of bearer and expiration date/extensions
- Valid or expired US visa for multiple entries and one photocopy
- Valid I-94 and one photocopy
- I-20/J-1 or I-797A Form in original and one photocopy
- One photo passport size, in color, no glasses
- Original financial records (last three months of your bank account statements in US Dollars, last three months of pay stubs).
- Curriculum Vitae (optional)
- Employment letter specifying:
- Applicant´s full name and nationality
- Registration number of the company/organization, plus address, complete name and contact information of the company/organization
- Work Position and salary of the applicant
- If a company/organization in Mexico is sponsoring or inviting the foreign national, the applicant can submit an original invitation letter*. The invitation must have a letterhead, address and signed in ink. Scanned or pdf versions won´t be accepted.
- Original Invitation Letter from the company/organization based in Mexico must be addressed to the Consulate of Mexico in Brownsville requesting the visa and specifying:
- Exact purpose or activity and length of time for the trip to Mexico
- How your expenses will be covered
- Applicant´s full name and nationality
- Registration number of the company/organization, plus address, complete name and contact information of the company/organization
- Specify commitment of shared responsibility with the applicant
- Copy of ID of the person who signed the invitation letter
- Last twelve months of company bank account statements.
If you can demonstrate that you are an international traveler, Mexican citizen´s spouse or international freight cargo driver ask for the Long-Term Visitor Visa (Visa de Larga Duración, in Spanish).
NOTE:
To apply, minors (under 18 years old) must be accompanied by parents (or legal guardian) and to submit original and official documentation proving affiliation (relationship between parents and child) or legal status as a legal guardian.

Work Visa for visitors with authorization (NUT) for lucrative activities (Pre-approved by the Instituto Nacional de Migración)
- Applicable to foreign nationals with a job offer in Mexico. If the purpose of entering into Mexico is working there and receiving a salary or payment (lucrative/remunerative activities).
- The employer has to be legally incorporated in Mexico and, as sponsor of the visa, must initiate the application before the Instituto Nacional de Migración (INM) in Mexico for an authorization. Once INM issues an individual Número Único de Trámite (NUT number) the applicant may schedule an appointment at the Consulate to undergo a consular interview and, if approved, get the visa stamped in the passport.
- Once you receive the NUT you only will have 30 days for to schedule the interview and the issuance of your visa.

- If you are not a US citizen, present a valid US visa or ESTA authorization and one photocopy, Valid I-94 and one photocopy

Note:
- The applicants information must match the data provided by the INM (system and letter). In case there is a mistake (name, passport number, nationality, date or place of birth) It cannot be modified at the Consulate. The sponsor must then request the correction directly with the INM.
Visa for the purpose of adoption
This type of visa is needed when:
- You are traveling to Mexico in order to complete the legal process to adopt a child
- You have received a report regarding the matching conditions with a child (informe de adoptabilidad o pre-asignación) Issued by the “State System for the Full Development of the Family” (Sistema Nacional para el Desarrollo Integral de la Familia, DIF)
Requirements:

- Fill in the Application form: English or Español
- Present a valid passport in original and one photocopy of the pages containing personal information, photograph of bearer and expiration date/extensions
- One photo passport size, in color, no glasses
- Report to be matched with a child (informe de adoptabilidad o pre-asignación) Issued by the “State System for the Full Development of the Family” (Sistema Nacional para el Desarrollo Integral de la Familia - DIF). Original and 1 copy
- Letter of acceptance and that you will continue processing a child´s adoption (issued by the Central Authority in Mexico). Original and 1 copy
- NUT authorization
- All documents from countries other than Mexico or the United States, must be translated to Spanish or English, currency equivalents in Mexican pesos or US dollars, and with the appropriate legalization or apostille.
Family Reunification Visa Pre-Approved by the Instituto Nacional de Migración “NUT”
This type of visa is for you if:
- You are a student or foreign national asking for a temporary or permanent residency, and you can prove to have a legal familial bond in Mexico.
- The application has to be initiated by your family relative in Mexico at the Instituto Nacional de Migración (INM).
- Once INM issues an individual Número Único de Trámite (NUT) the individual may schedule an appointment at the Consulate to undergo a consular interview and, if approved, get the visa stamped in their passport.
Requirements:
- Completed visa application form: English or Español
- Original valid passport. One photocopy of the data page, last page and any pages that have seals or visas stamped on them.
- If you are not a United States citizen, you must provide proof of legal entry to the US. The original document and a photocopy.
- One recent photo, passport size, no glasses, white background,

Visa for Temporary Residents
This type of visa is for you if:
- You are traveling to Mexico for retirement or investments;
- You will do professional, technical, scientific, artistic or sport activities that are non-profit or paid outside Mexico, or as a minister of religion
- You will be in Mexico more than 180 days
- You don´t have a work authorization and permit
Requirements:

- Fill out the Application form: English or Español
- Present a valid passport in original and one photocopy of the pages containing personal information, photograph of bearer and expiration date/extensions
- Valid US visa for multiple entries and one photocopy, or other legal entry/residence in the USA.
- One photo passport size, no glasses, white background.
- Non-refundable processing fee
- Documents that prove economic solvency to cover the costs of living during your stay in Mexico. Proof may be provided through one of the following:
- Original and a photocopy of financial records of your bank account statements in US Dollars proving a minimum monthly balance of at least $72,960.00 USD for the previous twelve months;
- If the applicant will work remotely, present of pay stubs or deposits in bank statements which include the full name and address, proving an income of at least $4,380.00 USD per month for the last six months; as well as an employment letter signed by a supervisor and addressed to the Consulate printed on company letterhead specifying:
- position and seniority within the company, monthly salary;
- Explicit agreement with the applicant’s plans to reside in Mexico and work remotely.
- A photocopy of the letter’s signatory ID must be provided as an attachment.
- If you have a retirement pension, bring the original yearly social security statement and one photocopy which prove an income of at least $4,380.00 USD per month for the last 6 months.
- You can also submit official documents proving the ownership of a property in Mexico and one photocopy of:
- the notarized deed (Escritura Pública otorgada ante Fedatario Público), issued within the previous six months to the date of the visa appointment,
- The real estate in Mexico should have a value of more than 583,660.00 US dollars at the time of application.
- Applicant may provide also proof of other ownership such as a profitable company/business.
- If a company/organization/association based in Mexico is sponsoring or inviting the foreign national, the applicant should submit an original invitation letter* that must have letterhead with the address of such organization, and signed in ink. Scanned or pdf versions won’t be accepted.
* Invitation Letter
Original Invitation Letter must be addressed to the Consulate of Mexico requesting the visa and specifying:
- Exact purpose of non-profit, non-remunerable or lucrative activity, and length of time for the stay in Mexico
- How your expenses will be payed
- Applicant´s full name and nationality
- Registration number in Mexico of the company/organization, including address, complete name and contact information
- Specify commitment of shared responsibility with the applicant
- Copy of ID of the person who signed the invitation letter
- Twelve months of company’s bank account statements
- Ministers of religion should submit original letter of “anuencia” (consent) of the Ministry of the Interior (Secretaría de Gobernación) from Mexico.

Temporary Resident students
This type of visa is for you if:
- You are traveling to study in Mexico
- You don´t have a work authorization
Requirements:

- Economic Solvency
- Original and copy of bank account statement or investments showing an average monthly balance of $14,600.00 US Dollars during the past three months; or
- Original and copy of documents showing that the applicant has a job, pension or scholarship with a monthly income of $1,460.00 US Dollars during the past three months
- If Sponsored by parents or legal guardian (only for students under 25 years old):
- Original Notarized Letter from parents stating that they will be sending their son or daughter the amount of, at least 1,460.00 US dollars per month, besides tuition (Affidavit of support)
- ID copy of parents (valid passports) and Applicant’s birth certificate (original and copy)
- Proof of economic solvency, including last three months of bank account statements showing an average monthly balance of $14,600.00 US Dollars during the past three months or original Employment Letter stating position and salary per month with a monthly income of $1,460.00 US Dollars

Permanent Residents
This type of visa is for you if:
- You are moving to Mexico to be there indefinitely
- You don´t have a work authorization
- You are retired
Requirements:
- Apply at this Consulate in person
- Fill out the Application form, English or Español
- Valid passport in original and one photocopy of the pages containing personal information, photograph of bearer and expiration date/extensions
- If you are not a US citizen, present a valid US visa for multiple entries or original migratory document proving your legal status in US, and one photocopy
- One photo passport size, in color, no glasses, white background.
- All documents from countries other than Mexico or the United States, must be translated to Spanish or English, with currency equivalents in Mexican pesos or US dollars, and the appropriate legalization or apostille.
- Proof of economic solvency:
- Original and photocopy of last twelve months of your bank account statements or investment account showing an average monthly balance of $291,830.00 US Dollars; and/or
- Original Yearly Social Security Statement proving a monthly income from pension of $7,300.00 US Dollars during the past six months, and one photocopy. You can also submit official documents proving the ownership of a property/company/business and one photocopy.
Diplomatic or Official Visa
